Alverine is a generic medication that is commonly used to help patients aged 12 and over who are dealing with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Some of the symptoms associated with IBS include:
abdominal pains similar to cramps, which may come and go;
diarrhoea;
constipation;
feeling full and bloated; and:
an urgent need to use the toilet.
And these symptoms can worsen when you’re feeling anxious or stressed.
Apart from IBS, Alverine capsules can also be used for period cramps and a condition known as diverticular disease of the colon — when small pouches form in your colon wall, causing pain and inflammation.
How do Alverine capsules work?
Alverine belongs to a group of medicines called antispasmodics or spasmolytics. These medicines work by targeting the smooth muscles in your gut and womb and relaxing them. This means that you get fewer contractions, and relief from the pain caused by muscle tension during an IBS flare-up.
What doses of Alverine capsules are there?
Alverine capsules are available in two strengths: Alverine 60mg and Alverine 120mg. The usual dose is one 60mg or 120mg dose taken up to three times a day. Remember to always take it as your doctor advises.
When we present you with stats, data, opinion or a consensus, we’ll tell you where this came from. And we’ll only present data as clinically reliable if it’s come from a reputable source, such as a state or government-funded health body, a peer-reviewed medical journal, or a recognised analytics or data body. How to take Alverine capsules
Make sure to always follow the instructions your doctor or pharmacist gives you. If you're unsure about anything, don't hesitate to check with them before taking the medication.
For adults, including older people, the usual dose is either 60mg or 120mg, once, twice, or three times a day, depending on how severe your symptoms are. Please keep in mind that Alverine Citrate capsules are not suitable for children under the age of 12.
Take the capsules with a drink of water, either before or after meals.
When should I take Alverine capsules?
You can take Alverine Citrate at any time of the day, either before or after meals. It’s generally recommended to take one tablet up to three times a day. To help you build a habit and make sure you don’t miss any doses, it’s a good idea to take your medication at similar times every day.
How long does it take Alverine to work?
Alverine capsules start working pretty quickly, usually within 1 to 2 hours after taking the first pill. However, it may take up to 2 weeks of continued use before you notice a major improvement in your symptoms. So give it some time and stick to your treatment, even if you don’t see immediate results.
What should I do if I make a mistake when taking Alverine capsules?
If you or someone else accidentally takes too many Alverine capsules, it's important to seek immediate medical assistance. Contact your doctor or go to the nearest hospital emergency department right away. If possible, bring the box and any remaining capsules with you. Symptoms of an overdose may include:
low blood pressure (hypotension)
rapid heart rate
dizziness
dry mouth
blurred vision
dilated pupils
confusion
hallucinations
The doctor will evaluate your condition and determine how to best treat an overdose.
If you forget to take your scheduled dose of Alverine, simply take it as soon as you remember. If it has been more than 4 hours since the missed dose, continue with your next scheduled dose. Don’t take two pills at once to make up for a missed one.

Have something specific you want to know? Search our info below, or ask our experts a question if you can’t find what you’re looking for.
How does Alverine compare to other treatments?
Answer:
Alverine is a generic medication, but there are also brand names that contain the same active ingredient, like Audmonal and Spasmonal. They are available in the same dosages, so there isn’t much difference between them except for the price. The generic medication is usually cheaper.
It's important to remember that there is no cure for IBS yet. The currently available drugs are only efficient in treating the symptoms of IBS. If Alverine capsules don’t work for you or you’re allergic to it, there are other alternatives available to treat the symptoms of IBS.
Other medicines that belong to the same class of antispasmodics include:
Mebeverine hydrochloride, also available under the brand names Colofac, Colofac IBS and Aurobeverine
Dicycloverine hydrochloride
Hyoscine butylbromide, available under the brand name Buscopan
Another alternative is Fybogel Mebeverine, which is a combination of mebeverine hydrochloride and Ispaghula husk (a natural fibre-rich product used as a laxative to treat constipation). It comes as a powder sachet that you can mix with water to make an orange drink.
Can I drink alcohol while taking Alverine capsules?
Answer:
Yes, no interactions between Alverine capsules and alcohol have been reported. However, alcohol can trigger symptoms of IBS. So, it’s best to limit the amount of alcohol you drink as much as possible when dealing with IBS.
What are the side effects of Alverine capsules?
Answer:
Like all medicines, Alverine capsules can cause side effects, although not everyone gets them. Most common side effects include headaches, feeling sick (nausea) and dizziness.
If you experience any of the following more serious side effects, stop taking Alverine and tell your clinician immediately:
allergic reaction, like rash, itching, swollen lips/tongue;
wheezing or shortness of breath;
yellowing of the whites of the eyes and the skin, as these could be symptoms of liver inflammation (hepatitis).
Does Alverine cause weight gain?
Answer:
Alverine doesn’t cause you to gain weight. However, people with IBS can gain weight due to eating high calorie foods that are easier for them to digest or exercising less due to physical discomfort or psychological distress.
On the other hand, other people may experience abdominal cramps and pain and eat less than usual. This can decrease their calorie intake and result in weight loss.
Is Alverine safe to take during pregnancy or while breastfeeding?
Answer:
Before taking Alverine capsules, it's important to ask your clinician for advice if you are pregnant, think you might be, or are planning to have a baby. It’s also not recommended to take Alverine Citrate capsules while breastfeeding.
Can I buy Alverine capsules over the counter?
Answer:
No, you cannot buy Alverine Citrate capsules over the counter. It’s a prescription-only medicine. However, you don’t need a prescription if you’ve been diagnosed in the past.
