What are Stugeron travel sickness tablets?

Whether you’re travelling by road or sea, Stugeron tablets are a treatment to relieve symptoms of motion sickness. Stugeron’s active ingredient, Cinnarizine, works in a couple of different ways to ease your symptoms. It’s a type of antihistamine, which blocks the H1 histamine receptor and reduces the effects of histamine on your brain.^[1]

Studies also suggest that cinnarizine blocks calcium ions from moving across the sensory cells of your inner ear. These are the cells that detect motion and help you maintain your balance – so reducing this movement can help reduce nausea. And it helps keep a fluid called endolymph flowing, which transmits signals between your sensory cells and the brain. Maintaining this flow should help with your symptoms of motion sickness.^[1]

Who are Stugeron tablets suitable for?

Most adults and children over the age of five can take Stugeron tablets without any issues. But if you’re allergic to cinnarizine, or any of the other inactive ingredients in Stugeron (lactose monohydrate, maize starch, sucrose, talc, magnesium stearate, povidone), you shouldn’t take this medicine. You also shouldn’t take Stugeron if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding – speak to your clinician if you’re pregnant and want a treatment for motion sickness.

You should also speak to your clinician before taking Stugeron if any of the following applies to you:

• You’ve got Parkinson’s disease;
• You have porphyria (a hereditary blood disorder);
• You have liver or kidney issues;
• You’re fructose or galactose intolerant;
• You drink alcohol;
• You’re taking a type of tranquiliser to relax muscles or reduce feelings of anxiety;
• You’re taking tricyclic antidepressants or hypnotics to treat mood or sleep disorders.^[2]

What doses does Stugeron come in?

There’s only one Stugeron tablet dosage, that contains 15 mg of cinnarizine. Adults and children over 12 years old can take 30 mg before travelling, and 15 mg every eight hours after that. Children under 12 can take 15 mg before traveling, and 7.5mg every eight hours after that.

How to Use Stugeron

You can suck, chew, or swallow your Stugeron tablet. Adults and those over 12 can take two tablets two hours before setting off on a journey, and one tablet every eight hours of travelling afterwards. People younger than 12 can take one tablet two hours before travelling, and half a tablet every eight hours of the journey.

How long does it take for Stugeron to work?

It can take a few hours for Stugeron to take full effect after you take it. So it’s best to take your tablet at least two hours before you leave on your journey. It can take up to four hours to feel the full effects of Stugeron^[1]

What should I do if I make a mistake taking Stugeron?

You should only ever take Stugeron tablets as your clinician instructs you to. If you or someone you know accidentally takes too many Stugeron tablets, get medical attention right away. Symptoms commonly reported from an overdose of cinnarizine, the active ingredient in Stugeron, include:

• Changes in consciousness (from dizziness to stupor and coma);
• Vomiting;
• Drug-induced movement disorders; or:
• Decreased muscle tone.^[2]
