What are Stugeron travel sickness tablets?

Whether you’re travelling by road or sea, Stugeron tablets are a treatment to relieve symptoms of motion sickness. Stugeron’s active ingredient, Cinnarizine, works in a couple of different ways to ease your symptoms. It’s a type of antihistamine, which blocks the H1 histamine receptor and reduces the effects of histamine on your brain.^[1]

Studies also suggest that cinnarizine blocks calcium ions from moving across the sensory cells of your inner ear. These are the cells that detect motion and help you maintain your balance – so reducing this movement can help reduce nausea. And it helps keep a fluid called endolymph flowing, which transmits signals between your sensory cells and the brain. Maintaining this flow should help with your symptoms of motion sickness.^[1]

Who are Stugeron tablets suitable for?

Most adults and children over the age of five can take Stugeron tablets without any issues. But if you’re allergic to cinnarizine, or any of the other inactive ingredients in Stugeron (lactose monohydrate, maize starch, sucrose, talc, magnesium stearate, povidone), you shouldn’t take this medicine. You also shouldn’t take Stugeron if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding – speak to your clinician if you’re pregnant and want a treatment for motion sickness.

You should also speak to your clinician before taking Stugeron if any of the following applies to you:

You’ve got Parkinson’s disease;
You have porphyria (a hereditary blood disorder);
You have liver or kidney issues;
You’re fructose or galactose intolerant;
You drink alcohol;
You’re taking a type of tranquiliser to relax muscles or reduce feelings of anxiety;
You’re taking tricyclic antidepressants or hypnotics to treat mood or sleep disorders.^[2]

What doses does Stugeron come in?

There’s only one Stugeron tablet dosage, that contains 15 mg of cinnarizine. Adults and children over 12 years old can take 30 mg before travelling, and 15 mg every eight hours after that. Children under 12 can take 15 mg before traveling, and 7.5mg every eight hours after that.

Are there any alternatives to Stugeron tablets?

Answer:

Yes - there are plenty of different options if you’re looking for a way to treat your motion sickness. Scopoderm patches are a sticky skin patch you apply behind your ear and last for up to three days. So if you have a lot of travel coming up in a short period of time, Scopoderm could be a good alternative.

And if you want another type of oral motion sickness tablet, Kwells is another option. These contain the active ingredient hyoscine hydrobromide, which targets the organs in your inner ear responsible for balance. It blocks your ears from sending the signals to your brain that cause motion sickness and should provide relief from your symptoms.

However, studies suggest that oral cinnarizine comes with fewer side effects than hyoscine hydrobromide. In a study, even at higher doses of cinnarizine, there were almost no significant side effects. So if you want a motion sickness tablet that’s less likely to cause side effects, Stugeron could be the better option.^[1]

How effective is Stugeron?

Answer:

Cinnarizine has proven in double-blind, placebo-controlled trials to be an effective treatment for motion sickness. One such study divided 95 men into three groups that received either cinnarizine 50 mg, 25 mg, or placebo before a four-to-six hour voyage on rough seas with 3.5m waves. 65% of those on the 50 mg dose felt better on the voyage using cinnarizine compared to past voyages, compared to 41% of those receiving 25 mg and 31% who received a placebo. No significant side effects occurred in any of the groups.^[2]

Can you take Stugeron for vertigo?

Answer:

Yes. Cinnarizine, the active ingredient in Stugeron tablets, is approved as a first-line treatment to help manage symptoms of vertigo.^[3]

Do Stugeron tablets have any side effects?

Answer:

Like any medicine you might take, Stugeron tablets can cause some side effects. But they’re only mild, and won’t affect everyone. If you get a rash; feel breathless; start wheezing; your eyelids, face or lips swell; or you collapse, stop taking Stugeron right away. These are possible symptoms of an allergic reaction – speak to a doctor as soon as possible.

The most common side effects of Stugeron include:

Drowsiness;

Nausea;

An upset stomach;

Weight gain;

Tiredness;

Vomiting;

Upper abdominal pain;

Sweating more;

Skin lesions.
