Clenil Modulite is an inhaler treatment that is used to prevent mild, moderate and severe asthma and COPD. It can also be prescribed ‘off-label’ to help clear mouth ulcers.
The inhaler contains beclomethasone dipropionate, a corticosteroid. Corticosteroid inhalers work by reducing swelling in your airways, and are used daily to relieve symptoms like coughing, wheezing, and a tight chest. Unlike other corticosteroid inhalers, Clenil Modulite can also reduce swelling and irritation in the mouth, allowing your mouth ulcers to heal faster.
How does Clenil Modulite treat mouth ulcers?
Corticosteroid inhalers, often called ‘steroid inhalers’, are primarily used to treat lung-relation conditions like COPD and asthma. They’re usually taken daily to prevent symptoms, as opposed to reliever inhalers which provide quick relief from bouts of wheezing or breathlessness
If you have mouth ulcers that aren’t clearing up on their own or responding well to regular treatments, a clinician might suggest using Clenil Modulite. You spray the inhaler directly onto your mouth ulcers to reduce inflammation and soreness.
Using Clenil Modulite to manage mouth ulcers is considered an ‘off-label’ treatment, which means the medication is being prescribed outside of its usual license.[1] Don’t worry though, it’s a safe and common practice among clinicians if they think using a treatment this way will be beneficial for you.
Which doses of Clenil Modulite are there?
The inhalers come in four strengths: 50mcg, 100mcg, 200mcg, and 250mcg.
Because Clenil Modulite is normally used for treating asthma and COPD, the amount you need can work differently for managing mouth ulcers. A clinician might suggest starting on the 50mcg strength inhaler first to see if that improves your symptoms.
The recommended dose is to spray 50-100 mcg (one puff) directly onto your ulcers, twice a day.[2]
Changing doses is easy, so if you feel like you need to, you can change inhalers. If your mouth ulcers don’t respond well to the first dose you’re prescribed, a clinician might ask you a few questions about what you think could be causing them.

How to use your Clenil Modulite
For treating mouth ulcers, you’ll use Clenil Modulite differently than you would for managing asthma.
To use the inhaler:
Remove the cap from the mouthpiece.
Aim the mouthpiece of the inhaler towards your mouth ulcer
Release one spray onto your mouth ulcer.
Replace the cap to keep the inhaler clean.
Repeat these steps each time you use your inhaler. The usual dose is one spray, twice each day.
How long does Clenil Modulite take to improve mouth ulcers?
There’s no guarantee of how quickly your mouth ulcers will improve while using the inhaler. Mouth ulcers affect people differently, so there isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach to managing them.
If you don’t start to see an improvement in your symptoms after a week of using your inhaler, let a clinician know. They might suggest you try a different strength of Clenil Modulite, use more puffs each day, or recommend a different treatment altogether.
What should I do if I make a mistake while using Clenil Modulite?
You might not feel the effects of your inhaler right away. In the way preventer inhalers improve lung inflammation over time, you might need to use Clenil Modulite consistently for it to work effectively.
Using your inhaler more often than you should won’t improve your symptoms faster, and might cause side effects. If you forget your usual dose, don’t double the amount you use. Instead, just skip the missed dose and carry on with your usual routine.
If you think you’ve used your inhaler too many times, seek urgent medical attention.

FAQ: Clenil Modulite
Have something specific you want to know? Search our info below, or ask our experts a question if you can’t find what you’re looking for.
How is Clenil Modulite different from other mouth ulcer treatments?
Answer:
Beclometasone dipropionate is one of the only inhaled corticosteroids used (off-label) to manage mouth ulcers. Kelhale, which also contains beclometasone, is another steroid inhaler that’s used (again, off-label) in the same way.
Steroids are also used in other formulas to manage mouth ulcers. Betamethasone is one type – it’s used to manage a variety of inflammatory conditions. It’s available as tablets that dissolve in water, and as a mouthwash. Hydrocortisone is another kind. This comes in a tablet you place against the ulcer, where it gradually dissolves and releases the medication.[1]
Clenil Modulite might be suitable if your ulcers are on areas such as the tongue, where gels might or mouthwashes might not be able to reach.
How does Clenil Modulite work against mouth ulcers?
Answer:
Steroids have an anti-inflammatory effect, so they can help reduce the redness, soreness and swelling mouth ulcers can cause.
Reducing these symptoms means the ulcers have a better chance of healing. If your mouth ulcers are persistent and keep coming back, a clinician might refer you for more tests to check if other health conditions could be causing them. Lichen planus, coeliac disease, and Crohn's disease can all cause mouth ulcers, so this is something they could want to rule out.[2]
Can Clenil Modulite cause side effects?
Answer:
All medications carry a side effect risk, but not everyone will get them. Because you’re spraying the inhaler directly onto your mouth ulcers, you won’t be inhaling as much of the medication as you would if you were using it to manage asthma or COPD. This means you might be less likely to experience side effects while using your inhaler.
Commonly reported side effects include developing a hoarse voice or a sore tongue. If you experience these and they don’t pass, let a clinician know.
If you develop signs of an allergic reaction, such as sudden shortness of breath, go straight to your nearest hospital for urgent medical attention.
Do I need a prescription for Clenil Modulite?
Answer:
All ‘off-label’ medications require a prescription. This is so a clinician can make sure prescribing the drug this way is safe and suitable for you.
Can I use Clenil Modulite alongside other mouth ulcer treatments?
Answer:
Yes you can. There’s no ‘best’ treatment for mouth ulcers, so you might find a combined approach works better for you than using a single medication. Antiseptic gels and mouth rinses can be used alongside your Clenil Modulite inhaler.
Avoiding foods which might aggravate your mouth ulcers can also help, such as any that are spicy or salty. Drinking plenty of fluids and making sure you’re getting adequate rest can also help speed up the healing process.

People listened carefully to why I wanted to quit. And then you really feel heard.
The whole process was very careful, but due to family circumstances, this was not the time.
