Xylocaine is a spray treatment used to deal with symptoms of mouth ulcers (otherwise known as canker sores). This condition is extremely common and is thought to affect about 4% of the population worldwide.
It contains the active ingredient Lidocaine, which is a fast-acting anaesthetic-based medication. Xylocaine spray helps numb the affected area of your mouth to minimise pain and discomfort caused by mouth ulcers. It also has antibacterial properties which can help kill any harmful germs in your mouth.
It works by using the anaesthetic properties of its active ingredient Lidocaine. It quickly numbs the area of your mouth affected by ulcers, relieving pain and discomfort by preventing the nerves from sending pain signals to your brain.
Xylocaine spray also contains a small amount of ethanol, which helps to kill any harmful bacteria and speeds up recovery.
It’s only available as a 10% strength spray bottle, which means it contains 10% Lidocaine in the solution. The dose will depend on how severe your pain is, but 200mg or 20 sprays is the maximum recommended daily dosage.

Xylocaine spray acts quickly to numb pain in your mouth. Studies have shown that most people feel relief within about five minutes of spraying the affected area and effects for up to fifteen minutes.
It’s normally very safe to use if you follow the instructions in the package information leaflet that comes with your treatment. If you exceed the recommended dosage or experience any adverse effects, stop taking the medication and contact your clinician right away.
