Canesten HCClotrimazole and Hydrocortisone acetate
What is Canesten HC cream?
Canesten HC cream treats fungal skin infections that cause symptoms of inflammation, like swelling, redness and itching. It contains two active ingredients: clotrimazole (an antifungal) and hydrocortisone acetate (an anti-inflammatory steroid). So Canesten HC helps you fight off the fungal infection and soothes your discomfort by reducing swelling and itching.
It’s used to treat skin infections caused by various yeasts, including conditions like seborrheic dermatitis, athlete’s foot and ringworm. It can also be used for diaper rash and fungal infections in sensitive areas, like the genitals.[1]
Seborrhoeic dermatitis is a common skin condition that causes red, itchy and flaky patches on the scalp, face and oily areas of the body. It can be uncomfortable, but it’s not contagious or harmful. The condition is caused by Malassezia yeasts, the same yeast that has been linked to dandruff (also called non-inflammatory seborrheic dermatitis).[2]
How does Canesten HC cream work?
Canesten HC Cream has two active ingredients: clotrimazole and hydrocortisone acetate. The first one, clotrimazole, fights against yeasts and some bacteria that cause skin infections. It belongs to a group of medicines called imidazoles, which inhibit the production of ergosterol. Fungi need ergosterol to keep their outer membranes whole. By blocking its production, clotrimazole weakens the fungi and eventually kills them.[1]
Hydrocortisone acetate is a mild steroid with a very complex mode of action. It acts by reducing the swelling, redness and itching (pruritus) associated with skin inflammation. So it’s good at treating the symptoms associated with your seborrhoeic dermatitis, but that’s not all. It also makes your skin’s outer layer healthier, stops excessive cell growth, prevents harmful substances from building up on your skin, and stops excessive separation of skin cells (a process called acantholysis)[1]

How to use Canesten HC cream for seborrhoeic dermatitis
Follow these instructions carefully when using Canesten HC cream, unless your clinician advises you otherwise:
Before you use the cream, pierce the tube seal by flipping the cap over the tube’s end and pressing.
If the rashes are on your feet, make sure to wash and dry them well before you apply the cream, especially between your toes.
Apply Canesten HC cream in thin and even layers to the affected areas two or three times a day. Gently rub it in.
Around 1cm of cream per application should be enough.
Avoid covering the treated area with a dressing or bandage.
After applying the cream, remember to wash your hands right away.
Are there different forms of Canesten HC cream?
Canesten HC cream comes in two sizes (5g or 30g), but only one strength. Each gram of cream contains 10mg clotrimazole and 11.2mg hydrocortisone acetate (which is the same as 10mg of hydrocortisone).
Typically, a treatment course with Canesten HC cream only lasts seven days. This is because steroids can cause side effects if used for long periods.[1] You’ll likely notice relief from symptoms like itching or soreness in a few days, although it may take longer for redness and scaling to go away. If your symptoms persist or don’t get better after a week, it’s best to ask your clinician what to do next. They might suggest a different medication that could work better for you.

How well does Canesten HC cream work for seborrhoeic dermatitis?
Answer:
Both active ingredients in Canesten HC cream work well for seborrhoeic dermatitis. A clinical trial compared the severity of symptoms like itching, redness and scaling before and after treatment with clotrimazole or hydrocortisone compared to emu oil. After one month of treatment, both medications significantly improved itching, redness and scaling. Clotrimazole and hydrocortisone were more effective than emu oil in reducing scaling, and hydrocortisone was better at reducing itching compared to emu oil.[1]
In another study, 74 participants with scalp seborrheic dermatitis were treated with clotrimazole-hydrocortisone liniment, hydrocortisone, or a plain liniment base containing propylene glycol. All treatment groups showed significant relief in symptoms and a reduction in the affected area after four weeks. The clotrimazole-hydrocortisone group had the highest success rate of 84% (compared to 77% in the hydrocortisone group and 76% in the propylene glycol group).[2]
How is Canesten HC cream different to other treatments for seborrhoeic dermatitis?
Answer:
Canesten HC is a good option for skin infections like seborrhoeic dermatitis because it has both clotrimazole and hydrocortisone, which help with inflammation. But if you have an allergy to steroids or prefer to avoid them, you can try a cream that only contains clotrimazole like Clotrimazole or Canesten, or another antifungal cream.
Other topical treatments for seborrhoeic dermatitis include shampoos and ointments. Shampoos are used to treat seborrheic dermatitis on the scalp. You can try using over-the-counter dandruff shampoos, but if your condition is more severe, you'll probably need a prescription shampoo.
If you have seborrhoeic dermatitis on areas like your face, ears or chest and your skin feels dry or flaky, then ointments may be a better option for you. These ointments may have ingredients like clotrimazole, ketoconazole and miconazole, or corticosteroids such as hydrocortisone, fluocinolone, clobetasol and desonide.

It was a very simple, easy and quick process with Treated. All the questions were easy to answer and being able to send in a photo was (nerve racking) but great as they could see what was going on. They provided so many options but also a specific one after the survey so it felt like I was getting specialist treatment. Would definitely recommend-SO much easier and quicker than going to an actual clinic.
