Furthermore, the length of time you use them differs. Treatment with Cytisine only lasts 25 days, compared to Champix which lasts 84 days (12 weeks). You might prefer Cytisine’s shorter course, as it could mean you see results sooner.
Cytisine also has better tolerance among users, with fewer side effects being reported when compared with Champix.2 While both have similar side effects, side effects with Cytisine tend to be milder. One possible reason is that it doesn’t bind to the 5-HT3A receptor, which is responsible for causing nausea.1 It also doesn’t bind as strongly to the nicotine receptors as Champix, which might lower the likelihood of experiencing side effects.
But which is more effective? In terms of stopping smoking, both are more effective than placebo. However, varenicline (Champix) was found to be more effective than Cytisine. In one study, the results showed that 32.46% of Champix users stopped smoking after 24 weeks compared to 23.12% in the Cytisine group.3
To summarise:
- Both Cytisine and Champix can help reduce nicotine cravings and the pleasure effects caused by nicotine.
- Cytisine treatment lasts 25 days. Champix treatment lasts 12 weeks.
- You’re less likely to experience side effects with Cytisine than with Champix.
- Champix is slightly more effective than Cytisine.
