Regurin XL Trospium
What is Regurin XL?
Regurin XL treats urinary incontinence, a common condition that affects millions of people every year. The symptoms usually include involuntary leaking urine, and needing to pass urine more urgently and frequently. Regurin XL 60mg prolonged release capsules contain the active ingredient trospium chloride. This relaxes the bladder muscles which helps control urination. By taking one capsule a day, you can stop the frequent urge of needing to urinate.
How does Regurin XL work?
Urinary incontinence can happen due to uncontrollable muscle contractions, resulting in involuntary urination or the need to urinate urgently. The active ingredient in Regurin XL, trospium chloride, is an antimuscarinic. Antimuscarinics help prevent the actions which lead to bladder muscles contracting. So when trospium is absorbed by the body, it relaxes the bladder muscles. This increases bladder capacity, and reduces bladder contractions and the urgent need to urinate. This means your bladder can hold more and you won’t have the urge to go to the bathroom as often.
What versions of Regurin’s are there?
There are 2 versions of Regurin: Regurin XL 60mg prolonged-release capsules and Regurin 20mg tablets. Regurin XL is a prolonged-release capsule. This means it’s slowly released and absorbed throughout the day. Because of this only one capsule needs to be taken daily, compared to two tablets a day for Regurin 20mg.

Regurin XL Trospium
How to take Regurin XL
To take Regurin XL follow the instructions below:
- Swallow one capsule with a whole glass of water.
- Take it one hour before a meal or on an empty stomach.
The usual dosage for Regurin is one capsule a day unless our clinicians advise differently.
When starting Regurin our clinicians will decide the duration of your treatment. You’ll also have a check-up every 3-6 months to see if the treatment needs to be continued. Not taking your medication for the duration you have been prescribed can cause your symptoms to return. So you should take Regurin XL 60 mg for the entire duration you’ve been prescribed.
Who is Regurin XL not for?
Don’t take Regurin XL if you have any of the following:
- Blockage of the urinary tract
- An eye condition called glaucoma
- Abnormal/faster heartbeats
- Myasthenia gravis
- A severe gastrointestinal condition
- Any problems with the kidney
- Severe problems with your liver
Talk to our clinicians, before taking Regurin XL, if you have any of the following:
- Stomach or bowel obstruction
- Impaired urine flow
- Neuropathy
- A hiatus hernia is associated with reflux oesophagitis.
- Overactive thyroid
- Heart conditions
- Liver problems
Inform our clinicians if you are currently taking any medication, especially if you take:
- Antidepressants
- Asthma treatments
- Other medications with anticholinergic action
- Metoclopramide
- Medicines containing guar, colestipol or colestyramine.
Do not give Regurin XL to children under the age of 18.
What happens if I make a mistake while taking Regurin XL?
If you forget to take a dose, skip it. Don’t take a double dose. If you accidentally took more than the correct dosage, contact your doctor for advice on what to do.
