Toviaz is a type of medicine called an antimuscarinic. It works in your bladder to reduce its overactivity, giving you more control over when you pass urine.
Urinary incontinence is when you can’t control your bladder in the way you’d like, so urine leaks involuntarily. It can happen to anyone, but it’s most common in the elderly.
There are four different types of incontinence:
Toviaz helps relax the muscles of the bladder, improving bladder control and reducing your trips to the bathroom.
Fesoterodine blocks certain receptors in the body called muscarinic receptors. When it enters the bloodstream, enzymes break it down into its primary active form (known as the 5-hydroxymethyl derivative), which causes the medication to take effect in the body.
Once broken down, fesoterodine helps to prevent the signals that cause your bladder muscles to tense. So, by relaxing your bladder muscle wall lining, Toviaz weakens the contractions, reducing pressure on your urethral sphincter.
As a result, you’ll experience more control over your bladder and urinations.
Toviaz is available as 4 mg or 8 mg prolonged-release tablets. You’ll typically start on the lower dose of 4 mg a day and then, after an evaluation of whether it’s improved your symptoms or not, your clinician may then increase it to one 8 mg tablet a day.

When taken orally, fesoterodine is rapidly broken down and absorbed into the body. It reaches peak plasma levels (when the highest level of the drug is in your blood) after five hours, and can start working to reduce your symptoms after the first dose.
If you’ve taken more Toviaz than what was prescribed, you should seek urgent medical attention, taking the blister pack of tablets with you. If you forget to take a tablet, take it as soon as you remember. However, do not take more than one tablet in a day. Do not double dose to make up for a missed tablet.
