Diflucan Fluconazole

What is Diflucan?

Diflucan is a type of antifungal medicine that contains the active ingredient fluconazole. It’s proven to be an effective treatment for vaginal thrush – studies show the rates of clinical effectiveness for a single oral capsule are around 80% in the short term, and 76% in the long term.[1]

As well as fluconazole, Diflucan also contains a small amount of lactose (the sugar found in milk). Diflucan also contains less than 23 mg of sodium per capsule, making Diflucan ‘sodium-free’.

How does Diflucan work?

Flucanozole targets and inhibits an enzyme in the fungus Candida, which causes thrush infections. This enzyme is responsible for helping form a critical part of the fungal cell membrane. Disrupting it creates holes in the cell membrane, causing the contents of the cell to spill out.[2]
This kills the fungal cells, stopping the infection spreading and clearing it up.

What doses does Diflucan come in?

Diflucan comes in a range of different doses, depending on what you’re taking it for. We offer Diflucan 150 mg capsules as a single-dose vaginal thrush treatment. It also comes in the following doses and forms:

  • Diflucan 2 mg/ml injectable solution;
  • Diflucan 10 mg/ml or 40mg/ml liquid suspension (where the medicine is held in a liquid you drink);
  • Diflucan 50, 100, 150, or 200 mg oral capsules.

How to Use Diflucan

To treat vaginal thrush in adults, just take a single 150 mg dose of Diflucan. If you’re taking Diflucan to try and stop thrush coming back, take 150 mg of Diflucan every third day for a total of 3 doses. Then, take a 150 mg tablet once a week for 6 months.

How long does it take for Diflucan to work?

Diflucan should clear up symptoms of vaginal thrush in just seven days. A study in which 50 women with thrush were given one 150 mg Diflucan oral capsule showed that after just 5-15 days, Candida (the fungus that causes vaginal thrush) had been wiped out completely in 76% of the women.[1]

What should I do if I make a mistake taking Diflucan?

If you take too much Diflucan, you should get medical assistance as soon as possible. You may feel unwell, see and hear things that aren’t there (hallucinations) and get feelings of paranoia.[2]
You might need treatment for your symptoms, or to have your stomach flushed out.

Does Diflucan have side effects?

Answer:
Like all medication, there’s a chance you’ll get some side effects after taking Diflucan. However, not everybody will get them. Some people can have an allergic reaction to Diflucan, although serious reactions are rare. Symptoms of an allergic reaction may include:

  • Sudden difficulty breathing, a tight chest, or wheezing;

  • Swollen face, lips, or eyelids;

  • Itching, red skin, or itchy red spots;

  • Skin rash or blistering (this can affect the mouth and tongue).


Tell your doctor immediately if you get any symptoms of an allergic reaction.

Diflucan can also affect your liver. Tell your doctor if you get signs of liver problems, including:

  • Tiredness;

  • Loss of appetite;

  • Vomiting;

  • Your skin or the whites of your eyes yellowing (jaundice).


Other common side effects of Diflucan are:

  • Headaches;

  • Stomach pain or discomfort, diarrhoea, nausea, and vomiting;

  • Rashes.

Does Diflucan interact with any other medication?

Answer:
In 2004, it was reported that a 73-year old man taking both nitrofurantoin (also known as MacroBID) and fluconazole developed combined hepatic and pulmonary toxicity. An interaction between the two drugs may have been the cause, but the mechanism isn’t understood.[1] Speak to your doctor before taking MacroBID and Diflucan together.

If you’re wondering whether you can take Diflucan with antibiotics, the answer’s yes. In fact, Diflucan can help with yeast infections caused by antibiotics. As well as harmful bacteria, antibiotics can also kill off some helpful bacteria in the body, too. This can upset the natural balance in the environment of your vagina, and can increase your risk of a yeast infection.

Taking Ibuprofen with Diflucan may increase the effectiveness of both in treating thrush. Ibuprofen has shown antimicrobial activity against Candida, the yeast that causes thrush. When combined with fluconazole (the active ingredient in Diflucan), ibuprofen improved fluconazole’s activity with eight of the 12 Candida strains studied, including four of five fluconazole-resistant strains.[2]

Can you get Diflucan over the counter?

Answer:
No; it’s a prescription only medicine, meaning you’ll need a clinician to prescribe Diflucan – it’s not available over the counter. This is because it isn’t suitable for everyone, and an expert needs to check it’s safe for you. What alternatives are there to Diflucan?

Answer:
There are a lot of options to choose from when it comes to treatment for vaginal thrush. Clotrimazole is another antifungal agent that can be used to fight off thrush infections. It comes in external and internal creams, oral tablets, and pessaries (capsules you insert into the vagina). 

Can Diflucan treat oral thrush?

Answer:
You can take fluconazole, the active ingredient in Diflucan, for oral thrush. The dose is just a little different from what you’ll take for vaginal thrush. Usually, you’ll take 50 mg of fluconazole a day for one or two weeks to treat oral thrush.

Can you take Diflucan while pregnant?

Answer:
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or planning on starting a family, speak to your doctor or pharmacist before starting Diflucan. If you become pregnant while taking Diflucan, or within a week of your last dose, you should also contact your doctor.

Can you drink alcohol with Diflucan?

Answer:
Yes. You can drink and eat normally while taking Diflucan.

Can men use Diflucan?

Answer:
Yes. Diflucan can treat oral thrush and thrush on the head of the penis (balanitis) in men.
