What is Betnovate?

Betnovate (betamethasone valerate) is a topical steroid that helps reduce the symptoms of vitiligo. It’s used to stop the spread of white patches and can sometimes repigment your skin. Potent steroids, like Betnovate, are typically a first-line treatment for vitiligo.^[1]

However, it may not be suitable for everyone with vitiligo. It’s usually prescribed to adults with non-segmental vitiligo that affects less than 10% of their body.^[3] Non-segmental vitiligo is the most common form of the condition, often appearing as symmetrical white patches on both sides of the body.

How does Betnovate work?

Vitiligo is an autoimmune condition where the immune system attacks melanocytes in your body. Melanocytes are responsible for the colour of your skin. Without them, your skin will lose colour, resulting in white patches.

Although the exact mechanism by which steroids treat vitiligo isn’t fully understood, Betnovate can suppress your immune system to keep it from attacking melanocytes. This slows the progression of vitiligo and may restore lost skin colour.^[2]

It’s important to note that Betnovate can’t cure vitiligo, but treats the symptoms and slows its progression.

What are the doses of Betnovate?

All three forms of Betnovate (cream, ointment and lotion) come in a single dose of 0.1% betamethasone valerate.

The form you get will depend on the area being treated. For example, you might be recommended creams or lotions for larger sections as they spread more easily.

How to use Betnovate

Whether you’re using Betnovate cream, lotion or ointment, the application method will be the same.

To use Betnovate:

• Wash your hands.
• Apply a thin layer of Betnovate to the affected area.
• Gently rub it in until it disappears.
• Wash your hands again after application (unless you’re treating your hands).

Your clinician will recommend a dosage based on the severity of your condition and your tolerance. In any case, don’t stop using Betnovate unless your clinician has advised you to do so. Suddenly stopping can cause withdrawal symptoms, such as irritation and redness.

Can I use Betnovate on my face?

You can apply Betnovate on your face, but only for five days. Using it for longer than this can harm your face

How long does Betnovate take to work?

It might require several weeks of application to notice an improvement in your symptoms. Your clinician will also check in with you monthly to make sure everything is going well with your treatment. If you see no visible improvement within two months, you may be advised to stop treatment and try an alternative.

What should I do if I make a mistake when applying Betnovate?

If you forget a dose, apply it when you remember. If it’s close to your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue as normal.

If you accidentally apply too much, seek medical attention. Using too much can cause side effects.
