Mometasone Nasal Spray

What is Mometasone nasal spray?

Mometasone is a generic corticosteroid treatment for allergic rhinitis – allergy symptoms that you feel in your nose. But because it works to expand your airways, it can be prescribed to people with sinusitis or nasal polyps, too. You usually spray it one or two times in each nostril, once a day. For sinusitis it’s prescribed off-label, meaning that it’s not officially licensed for this condition, but there’s plenty of clinical evidence that it works.

The active ingredient, mometasone, can also be found in other forms of medicine, such as topical creams or ointments for skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis, and in an inhaler for asthma.

How does Mometasone nasal spray work?

Mometasone is a corticosteroid. This means that it can do a few things, but its main function is to reduce inflammation. So in the case of allergic rhinitis caused by conditions like hay fever, it works to open up your airways, which reduces the mucus and irritation and helps your symptoms.

Because it takes a while to get into your cells and take full effect, you might not notice any difference in your symptoms for a couple of days, and it might not reach its full effect for around two weeks. So it may be best to start taking it before your symptoms set in if you get hay fever around the same time each year.

What doses of Mometasone nasal spray are there?

There’s only one dose of Mometasone nasal spray, which is 50 mcg per dose. If it’s not working for you to help your symptoms at this dosage then speak to our clinician, you might need to try another treatment.

How to use Mometasone nasal spray

You should always take Mometasone nasal spray exactly as our clinician has advised you to. The standard dose for allergic rhinitis caused by hay fever is two sprays in each nostril, once a day, but you might be advised to reduce your dose when you start feeling better. When you’re using it for the first time, you’ll need to ‘prime’ the bottle by pumping the spray ten times until a fine mist comes out.

• Before using it, remove the dust cap
• Gently shake the bottle
• Place your index and middle fingers each side of the nozzle, and your thumb underneath the bottle
• With the nozzle facing away from you, press down on the nozzle ten times until a fine mist comes out
• If you haven’t used the spray for 14 days or more, you’ll have to ‘re-prime’ it by pumping it twice until a fine mist comes out

To use the spray:

• gently shake the bottle and remove the dust cap
• blow your nose
• close one nostril and put the nozzle into the other, open, one tilt your head forward slightly, keeping the bottle upright
• start to breathe gently and slowly with your nose and as you’re breathing in, press down once with your fingers to produce the spray
• breathe out through your mouth, and then repeat the above step in the same nostril if you’ve been instructed to use two sprays per nostril
• if you haven’t been instructed to use two sprays per nostril, repeat these steps for the other nostril

After using the spray, make sure that you wipe the nozzle clean with a tissue and replace the dust cap.

How long does it take Mometasone nasal spray to work?

It will take a few days to notice an improvement in your symptoms, and might take a few weeks for it to reach its full effect. It’s best to take Mometasone before your symptoms start to give it plenty of time to start working.

What should I do if I make a mistake when using Mometasone nasal spray?

Let your doctor know straight away if you’ve used more Mometasone than you should have done. If you forget to take your dose, use it when you remember, and then carry on as normal. Don’t double up on doses to make up for missed ones.
