What are Deponit patches?

Angina is a condition which causes attacks of chest pain. It’s caused by reduced blood flow to the heart. Deponit patches help to prevent angina attacks from happening and help you manage your condition.

Deponit patches are easy to use and come in individually wrapped pouches. Because the patches release treatment slowly through your skin, they help you build up a steady dose of medication in your system without the need to keep taking more pills.

How do Deponit patches work?

The active ingredient in Deponit patches (the thing that makes them work) is glyceryl trinitrate. This is a type of medication called a nitrate. These work by dilating the blood vessels around the heart, allowing blood to flow more easily in and out of it.

Angina is a condition usually caused by the narrowing of the arteries that lead to the heart. This happens when plaque builds up in the coronary arteries. By helping the coronary arteries to open up, it lowers your risk of attacks, and eases them if they happen.

What doses of Deponit patches are there?

Deponit patches come in two doses. The lower dose patch releases 5mg of the active ingredient over 24hrs, while the higher dose patch releases 10mg of glyceryl trinitrate over 24 hours. You’ll usually start on one patch a day, with a break of at least ten hours a day so you don’t build up a tolerance to the medication.

For some people, one patch of the lowest dose is enough to control their angina fully. But if you still need help managing your symptoms, go back to your clinician. The higher-dose patch might be right for you, or you might need to use more than one patch a day.

How to use Deponit patches

Always follow your clinician’s advice on how exactly to use Deponit patches.

• Each morning, get ready to put a new patch on
• Wash and dry your hands and the area of skin you’re applying the patch to before you use it
• Try to use a different area of skin to apply the patch to every morning, only reusing the same piece of skin after several days
• Pick a smooth, undamaged, hairless area of skin to apply the patch to
• Tear open the top of the wrapper and take the patch out
• Fold the patch along the s-shaped cut. Hold one side and peel away the other, so the sticky side of the patch is exposed
• Peel off the rest of the backing and press the patch firmly down on your skin with your palm

How long does it take for Deponit patches to work?

The medication in Deponit patches is absorbed slowly through the skin, and it takes some time to build up in your body. It can take up to six weeks for you to start feeling a major difference in your health, but many people feel better after a few weeks.

Remember that Deponit patches won’t treat angina attacks when they’re happening, so you’ll often need another medication to help with managing your angina symptoms. Medication for treating angina attacks when they happen is rapidly absorbed, while Deponit patches work to prevent your symptoms over a longer period of time.

What should I do if I make a mistake while using Deponit patches?

If you accidentally use too many Deponit patches, remove the patches and seek medical attention right away. If you forget to change your patch, take the old one off as soon as you remember and put a new one on. Then carry on as before.

If you forget to put on a patch at your usual time, put one on as soon as possible. Then continue with your treatment as normal. Don’t use more patches than normal to make up for missing some.

Don’t put Deponit patches on broken or damaged skin. Take care not to stretch the skin when you put the patch on. When you apply the patch, don’t pull it off and put it back on again. Just leave it where you’ve applied it until it’s time to remove the patch.
