You also have the choice of topical corticosteroids, which are steroids applied directly to your skin. These work by reducing inflammation in eczema, reducing itching and helping the affected skin heal.
Steroids come in different forms, like creams, ointments, lotions or gels. They come in different strengths:
- mild (e.g., hydrocortisone);
- moderately potent (e.g., Eumovate);
- potent (e.g., Betnovate);
- very potent (e.g., Dermovate).
A study showed that 0.05% clobetasone butyrate cream works just as well as 0.1% betamethasone valerate in treating patients with atopic or contact dermatitis. This means that for mild to moderate cases, you don't need to use very strong steroids to get effective and fast relief.[1]
In more severe cases though, the advantages of using stronger steroid treatments might be greater than the potential risks.
