Mebeverine treats symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). It’s an antispasmodic, meaning it suppresses bowel spasms, preventing frequent bowel movements. IBS is a condition affecting the gastrointestinal tract. It causes symptoms like cramps, abdominal pain and abnormal bowel movements. There’s no cure for IBS, but treatments work to ease symptoms associated with it.
How does Mebeverine work?
Mebeverine mainly functions as an antispasmodic by targeting the smooth muscles of the gastrointestinal tract, which helps to prevent spasms from occurring in the lower abdomen and gut.
It also works in other ways, such as by:
increasing water reabsorption - A smaller volume of urine and stool is produced, as more water is reabsorbed; and:
creating anti-muscarinic inhibitory effects - This helps relieve symptoms of IBS, like abdominal pain, gas and constipation, as it decreases movement in the smooth muscle and gastrointestinal tract.
The difference between the two is that the modified-release capsules gradually release the active ingredient throughout a longer period of time, rather than in one go. This allows you to have the effects lasting all day with fewer pills.

Does Mebeverine cause constipation?
Answer:
Mebeverine is only suitable for people with IBS as a short-term treatment. Although it doesn't have many side effects, individuals with constipation and an inactive gut should consult their clinician before taking it, as it can worsen these conditions.

How does Mebeverine compare with other treatments for IBS?
Answer:
Mebeverine is the generic version of Colofac. They both contain the same ingredients at the same concentration. The one you choose is completely up to you, both are effective at treating IBS symptoms.
Other similar treatments to Mebeverine include Fybogel Mebeverine. It contains the same active ingredient, mebeverine hydrochloride, and an additional ingredient, ispaghula husk. Together, both ingredients help prevent spasms and regulate bowel movements.
Buscopan is another popular treatment for IBS. It contains hyoscine butylbromide, which works similarly to mebeverine. It stops spasms, which help relieve abdominal pain and discomfort.
