Betnovate is a type of steroid medication called a corticosteroid. It’s a potent medication for skin conditions like eczema, dermatitis, psoriasis, and lichen planus.
Corticosteroids help to reduce swelling, irritation, and inflammation as a result of rashes. It is available as a cream, ointment, lotion, and scalp solution.
Lichen planus is an inflammatory skin rash that affects your skin, nails, and mucous membranes, which include your mouth and genitals. It’s not contagious, but the raised purple or red bumps may be itchy and painful. It’s thought to be caused by your immune system being triggered by a few factors, such as medications, infections, and chemicals (perfumed products). It can clear up by itself in nine to eighteen months and doesn’t usually come back after it’s cleared up.
Topical corticosteroids reduce inflammation caused by the immune system becoming triggered. They reduce swelling by making certain types of cells less active and by blocking the production of certain chemicals that cause this reaction. Betnovate will help with symptoms associated with lichen planus, such as itchiness, pain, and irritation.
Betnovate is for moderate to severe skin conditions, as it’s considered a potent topical treatment. Creams are better for skin that is moist and weeping, whereas ointments are thicker and greasier and better for dry or flaky skin.
Topical corticosteroid treatments are usually a first-line choice for cases of lichen planus, so our clinicians will make sure you are offered the best and safest treatments that will best help clear your rash.
All forms of Betnovate come in doses of 0.1% betamethasone valerate. That means each gram of the treatment contains 1 milligram of betamethasone valerate (the active ingredient).

When we present you with stats, data, opinion or a consensus, we’ll tell you where this came from. And we’ll only present data as clinically reliable if it’s come from a reputable source, such as a state or government-funded health body, a peer-reviewed medical journal, or a recognised analytics or data body. Follow the instructions given by your prescriber carefully for the best results.
You should start to see an improvement in your skin after a few days. Most courses of topical corticosteroids are for short-term use, but if after four weeks your rash hasn’t cleared up, speak to your clinician as you may need something stronger, or an oral treatment.
You should only apply to your face if your prescriber tells you to, and for no longer than five days, as the skin on your face thins easily. Don’t let the cream get into your eyes. If you forget to apply your Betnovate cream or ointment, apply it as soon as you remember, or wait until the next time you’re supposed to if it’s close to the time. If you apply too much and for too long, it can be heavily absorbed into your bloodstream, which can make you ill, so you should seek urgent medical attention as soon as possible.
