How to use Dermovate
When you use Dermovate Cream or Ointment for lupus skin rashes or patches, you can measure the amount using fingertip units. That’s just the amount that fits on the top of your finger down to the first bend. Usually, a fingertip unit of cream is enough to cover an area of skin twice the size of your palm.
To apply the cream or ointment, follow these steps:
- Wash your hands.
- Spread a thin layer over the affected area of skin.
- Avoid putting it on any cuts or broken skin.
- Unless you’re treating your hands, wash your hands after you’re done.
- If you’re applying Dermovate twice a day, leave 8 to 12 hours between each application.
Dermovate Cream is great for skin that is moist or weepy, while Dermovate Ointment works better for dry or flaky areas. But remember to always check with your doctor or pharmacist for advice on how to use Dermovate. This is especially important if you’re treating your child.
If you’re using Dermovate Scalp Application, here are some simple guidelines to follow:
- Give the bottle a good shake before each use.
- Wash your hands.
- Use the nozzle to apply a thin and even layer directly onto your scalp.
- Wash your hands again.
- Let your hair dry naturally.
- Use a small amount of the scalp treatment twice a day, in the morning and evening, until your symptoms get better.
How long to use Dermovate for?
Our clinician may recommend that you use Dermovate for a period of just 2 to 4 weeks to keep the risk of side effects low. For children under the age of 12, it’s even shorter—about 5 days at a time.
It’s important not to use clobetasol for longer than 4 weeks without talking to a doctor or pharmacist. If you need treatment for a longer stretch, our clinician might suggest trying a milder cream or ointment instead.
If you’ve been using Dermovate for a long time, it may be necessary to gradually reduce both the amount you use and how often you apply it before stopping the treatment. This gradual tapering helps reduce the chances of your symptoms returning.[1]
What should I do if I make a mistake when using Dermovate?
If you use too much Dermovate or swallow it by accident, it can make you feel unwell. It’s important to contact your doctor or go to the hospital straight away. It’s also useful to take the tube or package with you so the doctors know what made you ill.
If you forget to apply your treatment, don’t worry. Just apply it as soon as you remember. However, if it’s almost time for your next application, wait until then. Avoid using extra Dermovate to make up for a missed dose.
If you’ve been using it for a while, it’s important that you don’t stop the treatment suddenly, as this could make your condition worse. Talk to your doctor about how to safely stop using Dermovate.
