What is Kelhale?

Kelhale is an off-label treatment for mouth ulcers, also known as canker sores. Recurrent mouth ulcers are common, thought to affect around 25% of the population.[1] They aren’t usually serious and tend to heal without treatment over time. But they can be painful and uncomfortable, so using treatments, like Kelhale, can help speed up the healing process.

Kelhale is a steroid inhaler that has anti-inflammatory properties. It can be used to treat ulcers when antiseptics and other medications haven’t helped.

How does Kelhale work for ulcers?

Mouth ulcers can be caused by a few things, such as vitamin deficiency, injury, and infection. Inflammatory cells can trigger swelling that leads to the formation of these ulcers.[1] Beclometasone dipropionate is a steroid that can help reduce swelling by calming your immune system.[2]

What versions of Kelhale are there?

Kelhale is used for many conditions, including asthma, hay fever and skin conditions. It comes as an inhaler available in two different strengths: 50 and 100 micrograms of beclometasone dipropionate per one dose (one puff).

Although Kelhale isn’t a licensed treatment for mouth ulcers, it can effectively treat them and prevent them from recurring.

How to use Kelhale for mouth ulcers

Kelhale is an inhaler that’s typically used for asthma. To use it to treat ulcers, spray it directly onto your ulcer, twice daily. Try not to inhale it unless you have ulcers at the back of your throat.[1]

How long does Kelhale take to work?

Kelhale starts to work almost immediately, and within a day you should notice a drop in pain and inflammation. However, if after several days there’s no improvement in symptoms or your ulcer has worsened, contact your clinician for guidance.

What should I do if I make a mistake when taking Kelhale?

If you accidentally use more than you should (800µg), contact your doctor as soon as possible. They might take a blood sample to check your cortisol levels are normal.

If you forget to take a dose, don’t worry. Just take the next dose at your normal
scheduled time.

What are the side effects of Kelhale?

Answer:
Like all medicines, Kelhale can cause some side effects. But since you’ll be using a lower dose to treat ulcers, it’s less likely you’ll get them. Common side effects include:

  • Thrush in the mouth and throat. This is more likely if you use a dose higher than 400µg.

  • Hoarse voice or sore throat.

What are the alternatives to Kelhale?

Answer:
Before your clinician prescribes you Kelhale, they’ll recommend using an antiseptic or non-steroidal treatment first. Chlorhexidine is a mouthwash that also has antimicrobial properties. It can quicken the healing process and prevent future ulcers from forming. However, if you want instant relief, you might prefer Benzydamine spray. It helps reduce swelling and pain almost instantly.

Another similar treatment to Kelhale is hydrocortisone buccal tablets. Both medicines are in the same group of drugs (steroids). They work by stopping the release of inflammatory molecules and calming down your immune system to reduce swelling. The main difference between the two is that hydrocortisone is weaker than beclomethasone, so it might take longer for your ulcer to heal when using it.

How effective is Kelhale for mouth ulcers?

Answer:
Kelhale contains beclomethasone which is a potent steroid. The potency of a steroid determines how effective it is at producing an effect, which in this case is reducing inflammation. In a study, beclomethasone dipropionate was shown to be an effective treatment for ulcers. Most patients found it reduced the time it took to heal the ulcer and also decreased the severity of it.[1] Additionally, no side effects were reported in any of the patients. However, the study did find it wasn't good at preventing recurrent ulcers, so you might need to use another treatment to prevent them from coming back.

Can I get Kelhale without a prescription?

Answer:
