Chlorhexidine mouthwash can help create a healthy mouth and promote good oral hygiene. The active ingredient, chlorhexidine, is an antimicrobial that can treat conditions like gum disease and mouth ulcers, as well as prevent plaque buildup.
Mouth ulcers are common, thought to affect around 1 in 10 people. They’re not normally serious, but they can be irritating and painful when eating or drinking. They usually go away on their own within a couple of days, but using chlorhexidine mouthwash can speed up the healing process and reduce the severity and pain of the ulcers.
How does Chlorhexidine mouthwash work?
There can be many causes of mouth ulcers, such as injuring your cheeks or mouth, brushing, vitamin deficiencies and hormonal changes. When an ulcer is forming, it will feel tingly and look red. Within a couple of hours, it swells up and starts to hurt. This pain usually goes after three days, with the ulcer completely healing within a week.
Chlorhexidine mouthwash can decrease the time it takes to heal ulcers. Its antimicrobial properties can prevent infection by killing bacteria. It does this by damaging the cell walls of bacteria; preventing their growth and leading to their death.
Its antiseptic properties can also help promote good oral health by cleaning your mouth and removing food and microorganisms that could further aggravate your ulcers.
What doses of Chlorhexidine mouthwash are there?
Most chlorhexidine mouthwashes have a concentration of around 0.12%-0.2%, with the most common concentration being 0.2%. Having a higher concentration than 0.2% will generally result in unwanted side effects.

How to use Chlorhexidine mouthwash
Avoid using mouthwash straight after brushing your teeth, as this can prevent it from working. Wait at least five minutes after brushing before using mouthwash. For adults and children over 12:
Fill the cap with 10 ml of mouthwash. This is indicated by a line on the cap.
Rinse it in your mouth thoroughly for one minute, and then spit it out.
Use it twice a day.
Keep using it for two days after your ulcer has healed.
How long does Chlorhexidine mouthwash take to work?
Mouth ulcers typically heal within a week, but using chlorhexidine mouthwash can heal them quicker and prevent infection. The healing process can vary in timescale, depending on the size and severity of your ulcer.

FAQ: Chlorhexidine Mouthwash
Have something specific you want to know? Search our info below, or ask our experts a question if you can’t find what you’re looking for.
What are the side effects of Chlorhexidine mouthwash?
Answer:
As with all medicines, chlorhexidine can cause side effects for some people. Most of these only last for a short while, though. The most common include:
dry mouth; or:
mild burning or tingling sensation in the mouth.
You may also notice staining on your tongue and teeth. This, too, is normally temporary and will go away once the treatment stops. For stained teeth caused by chlorhexidine mouthwash, you can usually remove this by brushing your teeth twice daily with a whitening toothpaste and by avoiding drinks like tea or coffee.
If you notice peeling inside your mouth, dilute the mouthwash with water to lower the concentration.
How effective is Chlorhexidine mouthwash for mouth ulcers?
Answer:
Around 70 patients with mouth ulcers were split into two groups: one group using sucralfate suspension (SS) four times a day, and the second group using chlorhexidine mouthwash (CM) four times a day.
After a week, both groups were checked to see if their ulcers had healed. In the SS group, 23 patients (65.7%) were treated, compared to only 19 patients (54.3%) in the CM group. Additionally, the mean healing time of ulcers for the 23 patients using SS was around two days, compared to the 19 patients using CM, who had healed ulcers within three days.
This study concluded SS was more effective at treating mouth ulcers than CM. However, CM is easily available in the UK compared to sucralfate, which is only available with a prescription and is typically only prescribed for gastric ulcers.
Is Chlorhexidine mouthwash the best treatment for mouth ulcers?
Answer:
Chlorhexidine mouthwash is a prescription-free medicine and is readily available to get. It can heal mouth ulcers, prevent infection and can be used daily. It's an easy solution to mouth ulcers and is cost-effective.
However, if you want to instantly treat mouth ulcers, Benzydamine spray might be a better alternative. It contains an anti-inflammatory chemical, which takes just a few minutes to start working.
Additionally, if you suffer from recurring ulcers, this could be a sign of a vitamin deficiency. In these cases, it's best to take vitamins to reduce the possibility of recurrence and promote faster healing.
All three are effective medications for mouth ulcers; chlorhexidine mouthwash can promote good oral health, Benzydamine spray can provide instant relief, and vitamin B12 can prevent recurrences.
Is Chlorhexidine mouthwash similar to another medicine?
Answer:
Chlorhexidine mouthwash is the generic version of Corsodyl. It contains the same active ingredient at the same concentration. The main differences are the way it looks and the price. The one you choose is up to you.
