Lymecycline is an antibiotic. It has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties that prevent the growth of bacteria. [1] It’s typically prescribed to treat skin conditions like acne or perioral dermatitis.
Perioral dermatitis is a condition that’s characterised by a red rash around the face. It can be confused with acne as both are red, itchy and have acne-like breakouts. The exact cause is unknown, but the inflammation of the hair follicles and vessels leads to spots commonly around the mouth. [2]It’s normally treated with topical calcineurin inhibitors, or antibiotics if creams don’t work.
Lymecycline is in a category of drugs called tetracyclines. The way drugs in this category work is by binding to the ribosome (the part that makes protein) which stops the production of proteins. The lack of proteins prevents the growth of bacteria, which eventually kills them. It also lowers inflammation by reducing the amount of fatty acids in sebum (the oily substance present on the skin).[3]Â Excess fatty acids can cause spots, so reducing it can decrease them.

When we present you with stats, data, opinion or a consensus, we’ll tell you where this came from. You should take one capsule with a glass of water, with or without food. It’s preferable to take it in the morning. Depending on the severity of your condition, the dosage might differ.
It’s important to finish the full course of the treatment, even if you think your skin is better. This is to prevent the infection from returning.
Lymecycline is only available in a 408mg capsule. The length of the treatment will depend on the severity of your condition. For Perioral dermatitis, this can be several weeks or even months. Although you should see improvement within a week, it can be a slow and gradual process for your skin to completely clear.
