Montelukast is a tablet treatment that’s commonly prescribed to treat asthma. It can also be used to manage seasonal allergies and help reduce the urge to scratch itchy skin (known medically as pruritus). The active ingredient in the tablets, montelukast, belongs to a class of medications known as leukotriene receptor antagonists, sometimes referred to as antileukotrienes.
Often, it can be difficult to pinpoint exactly what’s causing your pruritus, as there are many things that can cause itchy skin. If you’re getting other symptoms, such as redness and soreness, it might be that you have another skin condition like eczema. Fungal infections, thrush, and athlete’s foot can all create itchiness. And women who are pregnant, or those going through menopause, can develop pruritus, too.
If there’s an underlying cause, our clinicians can help you identify it. Often pruritus occurs as a result of allergies, heat rashes or hives. Montelukast can help stop you from scratching, and can also ease additional symptoms like wheezing or runny nose.
Leukotriene receptor antagonists (LTRAs) are mainly used to treat chronic asthma. Leukotrienes are inflammatory molecules that are released by your mast cells (white blood cells found in connective tissues around your body) during allergic reactions and asthma attacks. These molecules cause bronchoconstriction, which makes it difficult for you to breathe. By blocking them from functioning normally, leukotriene receptor antagonists can prevent asthma and allergy symptoms from occurring.
If an allergen is causing your pruritus, then Montelukast can stop your symptoms from starting. LTRAs are sometimes used in combination with antihistamines.
Montelukast is available as 10mg tablets, 4mg and 5mg chewable tablets, and 4mg oral granules. The standard dose is one 10mg tablet a day, usually in the evening. If you’re using any other medication that contains montelukast, you should avoid using them at the same time.
If you’re using any skincare products, or anything else to manage your pruritus, let our clinician know. It could be that some of the ingredients in these products are contributing to your itchy skin.
How we source info.
When we present you with stats, data, opinion or a consensus, we’ll tell you where this came from. And we’ll only present data as clinically reliable if it’s come from a reputable source, such as a state or government-funded health body, a peer-reviewed medical journal, or a recognised analytics or data body. Read more in our editorial policy.
You should swallow your tablets whole, with a drink of water. You don’t need to worry about taking Montelukast before or after eating, as the tablets will work just as effectively without food.
For asthma, Montelukast is usually taken in the evening. You might be told to take it in the morning or the evening if you’re using the tablets purely to treat your itchy skin.
For managing asthma, Montelukast usually starts to relieve symptoms within a day. Because this medication is being used off-label to treat itchy skin, it might work differently person-to-person. This means we can’t say for certain how long it will take to improve your pruritus symptoms.
Studies have shown Montelukast to reduce itching significantly, which means it could be an effective choice for managing your pruritus. You can speak to a clinician to get a better idea of how long it will be before you start to see your symptoms improving.
You should get immediate medical attention if you take more Montelukast than you need. Swallowing too many tablets can cause abdominal pain and might induce vomiting, so you should head to your nearest hospital’s emergency department to be on the safe side.
If you forget to take a tablet at your usual time, take it as soon as you remember. If you miss a dose for any reason, don’t double up on the amount you take next time. Instead, just carry on taking one 10mg tablet daily.
