What is Adartrel?

Adartrel is a daily tablet treatment for restless legs syndrome (RLS). RLS is a condition that causes an uncomfortable feeling (sometimes called ‘bubbling’ or ‘crawling’) in your legs, particularly in the evening and at night, which can often only be relieved by moving them.

Although the condition isn’t necessarily bad for your health, there’s usually an underlying cause for it, such as iron deficiency anaemia, kidney disease, pregnancy, or cardiovascular disease. It can also lead to sleep disruption and distress, which can affect your physical and mental health.

How does Adartrel work?

Adartrel contains the active ingredient ropinirole, which belongs to a class of medicines called dopamine agonists. Dopamine is a chemical in your brain that facilitates the sending of signals to your muscles. Adartrel, like other dopamine agonists, works in a similar way to dopamine in order to help improve the transmission of messages from your brain to your muscles.^[1]

The exact cause of restless legs syndrome can vary from person to person, but by ‘copying’ the action of dopamine in your brain, ropinirole often works to ease the uncomfortable symptoms of RLS.

What doses of Adartrel are there?

Adartrel is available in three doses: 0.25mg, 0.5mg and 2mg. You’ll probably be advised to take 0.25mg per day to start off with, which can be gradually increased to a maximum daily dose of 2mg over the first few weeks.

If 2mg of Adartrel per day still isn’t working to improve your symptoms then this dose can be gradually increased up to maximum 4mg per day. After you’ve been taking Adartrel for three months you might be advised to adjust your dose or stop taking it.

Is Adartrel similar to any other treatments?

Answer:

There are a few different tablet treatments that have ropinirole as their active ingredient, such as Ipinnia, Raponer, Repinex and Requip. These treatments, though, are only licensed for Parkinson’s disease (rather than RLS).

Ropinirole is also available as a generic (unbranded) treatment. Generic ropinirole tablets can be used to treat both Parkinson’s and RLS, whereas Adartrel is licensed only to treat RLS. Both of these treatments are available in the same doses, and will work in pretty much the same way in your body to help your symptoms. Unbranded generic treatments are just made by different companies in different labs, and because they’re unbranded they’re usually a bit cheaper than branded equivalents.

How is Adartrel different from other treatments for restless legs syndrome?

Answer:

RLS treatments usually include iron supplements if your doctor determines that the cause is iron-deficient anaemia, alpha-2-delta ligands (like pregabalin or gabapentin — both used off-label for RLS) and dopamine agonists like Adartrel. Other dopamine agonists include Pramipexole, which is used for restless legs syndrome, and is available as a generic tablet as well as in branded treatments such as Mirapexin. You can also get a patch for RLS called Neupro, which might suit you better if tablets aren’t right for you.

Which dose of Adartrel should I use

Answer:

You’ll probably be advised to start on the lowest dose of Adartrel, which can be gradually increased until you find the dose that works best for you. The maximum daily dose of Adartrel is 4mg, and if it’s not working for you at this dose you might be advised to try something else.

How effective is Adartrel?
