What is Soolantra?

Soolantra is a branded cream-based medication that contains the active ingredient ivermectin, a drug that helps the body tackle parasites and inflammation. The cream is designed to deal with the pimples and spots that you can get with rosacea flare-ups, a common skin condition that affects approximately 40 million people worldwide. ^[1]

How does Soolantra work?

It isn’t entirely clear how Soolantra works, but it’s thought that the active ingredient ivermectin reduces symptoms of rosacea through its anti-inflammatory and anti-parasitic properties.^[2] Soolantra is specifically used to treat the bumps and blemishes caused by rosacea and has been very effective in clinical studies. Over 60% of participants noticed an improvement in their symptoms. ^[1]

What doses of Soolantra are there?

Soolantra is only available in one strength, 1%, which means that the cream contains 1% ivermectin. But it is available in three different sizes: 30g, 45g and 60g tubes. Which size tube to get depends on how severe your rosacea is, and your clinician can recommend the best option for you.

How to use Soolantra

Apply a small, pea-sized amount of gel to each of the five areas of your face (forehead, nose, chin and each cheek) once daily
Soolantra should be applied evenly and smoothly in a thin layer on the face and neck
Avoid eyes, lips, mouth and inner nose

How long does it take Soolantra to work?

Soolantra is usually prescribed for longer-term use, so don’t expect to see noticeable results right away. Studies have shown that some patients see a difference after about two weeks of use,^[1] but the most improvement was seen over a twelve-week period. So it can take a few months before you get the full benefits.

It’s important though to keep using Soolantra for as long as your clinician has prescribed it, as symptoms can come back even after you see an improvement.

What should I do if I make a mistake when using Soolantra?

There’s no evidence to suggest Soolantra is harmful,^[1] and it’s an easy product to use, but it’s important to always follow the instructions given by your clinician. If you feel any skin irritation or burning sensations, wash the area thoroughly, stop using Soolantra and contact your clinician for further advice.
