What is Levocetirizine?

Levocetirizine is a tablet that you take once a day to help you with common allergy conditions and symptoms, such as hay fever and hives. It’s an antihistamine, which means that it can get to work quickly to help you with your symptoms, and stays in your system for the full day.

Levocetirizine is a second generation antihistamine, so, unlike early antihistamines, it’s less unlikely that it’ll make you drowsy (although some people still do feel drowsy when they take Levocetirizine).

How does Levocetirizine work?

When your body detects something that it considers a threat, it produces a chemical called histamine to try and keep it out. In the case of allergic reactions, your body is reacting to something that it wrongly considers a threat, such as pollen.

Antihistamines, like Levocetirizine, work by binding to your histamine receptors and stopping histamine from causing your symptoms.

What doses of Levocetirizine are there?

There’s only one dose of Levocetirizine: 5mg. If it’s not working for your symptoms at this dose, please let our clinician know. You might need to try another treatment.

How to take Levocetirizine

You should always take Levocetirizine exactly as prescribed by our clinician. It’s not recommended for children under six. To use Levocetirizine:

  • swallow the tablet whole with water
  • take it with or without food
  • the recommended dose is one tablet per day

How long does it take Levocetirizine to work?

Levocetirizine gets to work pretty quickly to treat your symptoms. You should start feeling the effects after around an hour, and it reaches its peak approximately six hours after taking it. [1] It stays in your system for around 28 hours as well, so if you take it around the same time each day it should prevent your symptoms from setting in.

What should I do if I make a mistake when taking Levocetirizine?

Taking too much Levocetirizine can be harmful for your health and give you some unpleasant side effects. Seek medical help and advice if you’ve accidentally taken too much. If you forget your dose of Levocetirizine then skip it and take your next dose at the usual time. Don’t double up on doses to make up for missed ones.

Does Levocetirizine make you drowsy?

Answer:
Because it’s a second generation antihistamine, Levocetirizine has been formulated in a way so that it doesn’t easily cross the blood-brain barrier. As a result, unlike first generation antihistamines, it doesn’t interrupt histamine receptors in your brain, making it far less likely to cause drowsiness. [1]

Some people still get drowsy when they take Levocetirizine, though. So if you’ve taken it and feel drowsy, you should avoid driving or operating heavy machinery.

How is Levocetirizine different from other allergy treatments?

Answer:
Some allergy treatments come in the form of corticosteroids rather than antihistamines, which you may find suit you better if antihistamines make you drowsy. You can also get some hay fever or allergy treatments that come in the form of a nasal spray or eye drops, which might be more effective for you if you mainly get symptoms in either of those areas.

Is Levocetirizine similar to any other treatments?

Answer:
There is a branded equivalent of Levocetirizine, called Xyzal. This means that it contains the same active ingredient, in the same dosage. So it’ll work in much the same way as Levocetirizine to treat your symptoms, but because it’s branded, it’s usually more expensive.

Can you get Levocetirizine over the counter?

Answer:
No. Levocetirizine is a ‘prescription only medicine’. This means that you’ll need a prescription from a clinician before you can get it. If our clinician decides it’s safe and suitable for you, they can prescribe Levocetirizine to you once you’ve talked to us about your health.
