What is Bricanyl?

Bricanyl (or Terbutaline as it’s sometimes known) is a reliever inhaler that’s used to treat symptoms of asthma and other lung problems. It may also be suitable for patients who have COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), bronchitis and emphysema.

It’s a bronchodilator, which just means it’s an inhaler that widens the airways when you’re struggling to breathe properly.

How does Bricanyl treat asthma?

Bricanyl stops wheezing, coughing, and breathing difficulties by relaxing the muscles in the airways. It causes the airways to expand, and allows air to get into your lungs more freely. Bricanyl has been proven extremely effective in treating asthma and related illnesses. It starts to work in minutes, and lasts for up to six hours.

You only use reliever inhalers like Bricanyl when you experience asthma symptoms, or if you have an asthma attack.

How to use Bricanyl

When you use Bricanyl Turbohaler, it’s really important to read the instructions you get with it. Using ‘correct inhaler technique’ will help the medication to work at its best. If you haven’t been shown this, let us know.

To get your Bricanyl Turbohaler ready:

  • unscrew the cover
  • lift off the cap
  • hold it vertically upright. The blue grip should be towards the floor
  • twist the blue grip as far as you can one way, then do the same the other way
  • listen out for a click
  • repeat the twist you just did in both directions

To use Bricanyl:

  • take off the cover
  • hold it vertically upright, blue grip towards the floor
  • load a dose by twisting the blue grip as far as you can one way, and then the other
  • breathe out gently
  • put the mouthpiece between your teeth and fasten your lips around it
  • breathe in as hard and deep as you can
  • take the turbohaler out of your mouth
  • put the cover back on
  • rinse your mouth with water

What dose of Bricanyl should I take?

Usually, one 0.5mg dose when you get breathless (so one puff of the inhaler) up to four times a day. But the dose can vary depending on your health. We can chat to you about the right dose for you during your consultation with us. If you find that the dose isn’t working the way that it should for you, send our clinician a message. We can adjust your dose or explore other treatments with you.

Can I get Bricanyl Turbohaler over the counter?

No. Bricanyl isn’t available over the counter. It’s a prescription medicine only, so you’ll need to have a consultation with a clinician in the first instance so that they can decide if it’s suitable (and safe) for you to use.

Bricanyl can have side effects including headache, feeling shaky and muscle cramps. So a clinician will need to take these sort of factors into consideration before prescribing you Bricanyl.

FAQ: Bricanyl

Have something specific you want to know? Search our info below, or ask our experts a question if you can’t find what you’re looking for.

Why should I buy Bricanyl online with Treated?

Answer:
Given that there are so many asthma treatment options to choose from, it’s hard to know which medication is the right one for you. We’ll talk you through them, and help you to find bespoke treatment that’s suitable and safe.

Once you’ve picked your treatment, you can select how often you’d like us to deliver it to you, and the amount of medication too. And after that, we’ll stay in touch with you, on a regular basis, to check in and see how you’re finding your treatment. You can change, pause or cancel your subscription with us anytime.

Can I get Bricanyl as a tablet or liquid?

Answer:
You can, but not from us. They’re not routine treatments for asthma, and they’re potentially dangerous for pregnant women to use. There’s also a risk of them being abused for sporting purposes. Bricanyl tablets and liquids also aren’t absorbed by the body as well as Bricanyl inhalers.

Does Bricanyl work better than Ventolin?

Answer:
It’s more a case of what’s more suitable for you than which of the two is better as such. They contain different active ingredients (Ventolin has salbutamol in it, rather than terbutaline) but there shouldn’t be a big difference in terms of how well they work.

In adults, it depends on the type of inhaler you’re using and how quickly and deeply you can breathe into an inhaler. If you’re able to take deep breaths and breathe quickly when you’re using an inhaler, Bricanyl might be more suitable for you. But if you can’t take deep, fast breaths with an inhaler very easily, Ventolin might be a stronger choice for you. We can guide you through all of your options, and help you to select the right treatment for you based on your health.

Will I need to use another inhaler alongside Bricanyl?

Answer:
Usually, yes. Since it’s a reliever inhaler, it’s used to tackle asthma symptoms in real-time (so in the moment that you experience them). Another type of inhaler, called a preventer inhaler, works a bit differently. It’s an asthma treatment that you need to use on a daily basis to manage asthma (even if you think your asthma control is strong). A preventer inhaler allows you to build up protection from asthma symptoms over time. Preventer inhalers have a low-dose steroid in them that reduces swelling and inflammation in your airways.

We can chat to you about both reliever and preventer inhalers during your consultation with us, and help you to decide if you should be prescribed with both types of inhaler from there.
