What is Singulair?

Singulair is a branded medication made by Merck Sharp and Dohme using the active ingredient montelukast sodium. It’s an asthma maintenance treatment that is meant to be taken alongside other asthma medications.

This treatment can be used to help manage asthma and exercise-induced asthma, and it must be taken once a day in the evening, rather than when you experience the onset of an asthma attack.

How does Singulair work?

Singulair belongs to a group of medicines called leukotriene receptor antagonists. These treatments’ main function is to keep the receptors in your lungs from reacting to leukotrienes.

Leukotrienes are molecules produced in your body when you’re stimulated by allergens, and cause swelling of your airways, which makes it harder for you to breathe. This triggers allergies and asthma attacks . So by protecting your lungs from these, you will experience an improvement in your asthma symptoms.

What doses of Singulair are there?

Singulair film-coated tablets only come as a 10mg dose. This means that we cannot adjust the dosage if the treatment doesn’t work as well as you’d like. But we can recommend alternative medications for you, and we’ll monitor you to see how you get on with these treatments.

How to take Singulair

  • Singulair is a maintenance medicine so it must be taken once a day, every day.
  • Try to take the tablet at the same time every day. During clinical trials, people were given Singulair in the evenings, so it’s better if you take it in the evening too just in case the time of day has an impact on the effectiveness of the medication.
  • You can take Singulair with or without food.
  • Singulair is meant to be a supplement to your existing asthma treatment, so don’t stop taking your other medication once you start using this one.
  • Don’t stop taking Singulair unless our clinician advises you to.
  • Even if you’re not experiencing any symptoms of an acute asthma attack, you still need to take Singulair since its goal is to prevent asthma attacks from happening.
  • Our clinicians will provide you with help and advice on how to take this medication so if you have any questions or concerns, send them a message.

How long does it take Singulair to work?

Singulair starts working immediately after you take it, blocking the leukotriene in your body from affecting your lungs. It takes about a week for you to get the full benefits of the treatment.

What should I do if I make a mistake when taking Singulair?

If you forget to take your Singulair tablet, don’t take two doses in one day to make up for it. Instead, just skip the missed dose and resume your treatment as usual. It’s ok if you miss a dose sometimes, but if it happens often, you should set an alarm at the same time everyday to remind you to take your pill.

If instead of forgetting and missing a dose, you forget you already took it and double up, do not worry, it shouldn’t cause you any harm. It’s difficult to accidentally overdose on Singulair, but if by any chance you feel unwell after you take too many tablets, you should seek emergency medical attention immediately.

FAQ: Singulair

Have something specific you want to know? Search our info below, or ask our experts a question if you can’t find what you’re looking for.

How is Singulair different from other treatments for asthma?

Answer:
Singulair is a supplementary treatment for asthma and you shouldn’t take it by itself. You should use it when you’re already getting asthma treatment but it’s not working as well as you need it to.

There are other asthma treatments that can be prescribed to you if Singulair doesn’t work, like theophylline, or steroid tablets, but you’ll need to see a specialist. Steroid tablets can have unpleasant side effects that need close, constant monitoring, so Singulair is usually the recommended medication in the first instance.

Is Singulair similar to any other treatments?

Answer:
Singulair is the branded version of medicines that use the active ingredient montelukast sodium. It’s a treatment that’s made by a few different manufacturers, but ultimately the product is the same, and will work just as well no matter who produced it.

Even though all the montelukast sodium products work the same way, Singulair is the branded version, which makes it more expensive than the generic form. The tablets themselves and the packaging that the treatment comes in may also differ depending on whether it’s a branded or generic version.

Who is Singulair for?

Answer:
Singulair is for people of all ages who suffer from asthma. But it shouldn’t be your only treatment, and will only be prescribed if your regular asthma treatment isn’t working well enough and you don’t experience any relief in your symptoms.

Talk to us about your health and our clinicians will advise you on the best course of treatment, and assess if Singulair is right for you.

Do I need a prescription for Singulair?

Answer:
Yes, Singulair is only available on prescription. Our clinicians must make sure that Singulair is safe for you to use first, and then they will monitor your treatment to make sure that it’s working for you once it’s been prescribed.

Why should I buy Singulair online with Treated?

Answer:
Your health is our priority, so our service is designed to make it easy for you to get the treatment you need. Talk to us about your health and one of our clinicians will help you find the best asthma treatment for your specific needs.

We will stay in touch and check in regularly to make sure that the treatment you’re receiving is working and to see how you’re feeling in terms of symptoms. If Singulair isn’t helping, we will find something else for you to try.
