What is Trimbow?

Trimbow is a prescription inhaler used to treat asthma in adults. It combines three different medicines:

  • Beclometasone dipropionate (an inhaled corticosteroid, ICS) which helps to reduce inflammation of your airways.
  • Formoterol fumarate dihydrate (a long-acting beta-agonist, LABA) to relax and widen your airways.
  • Glycopyrronium (a long-acting muscarinic antagonist, LAMA) to help stop your airway muscles tightening.

Together, they make breathing easier and help to prevent asthma attacks. Trimbow is usually prescribed when asthma isn’t well controlled with other inhalers.[1]

How does Trimbow work?

Each of Trimbow’s ingredients tackles asthma in a different way.

  • Beclometasone reduces swelling and irritation inside your lungs.
  • Formoterol relaxes the muscles around your airways, helping to keep them open.
  • Glycopyrronium blocks signals that tighten your airways, making it easier to breathe.

This ‘triple therapy’ approach is shown to reduce flare-ups and improve lung function in people whose asthma hasn’t responded to other treatments.[1]

What doses of Trimbow are there?

Trimbow comes as a pressurised inhaler with 87 micrograms beclometasone, 5 micrograms formoterol, and 9 micrograms glycopyrronium. There is also a higher strength that comes in 172/5/9 micrograms.

You usually take two puffs twice a day, but your doctor will confirm the right dose for you.

How to take Trimbow

A more detailed list of instructions can be found in the leaflet that comes with your medication, but here’s a summary:

  • Shake your inhaler before using it.
  • Breathe out fully, then place the mouthpiece between your lips.
  • Press down on the canister as you breathe in deeply and steadily.
  • Hold your breath for a few seconds, then breathe out slowly.
  • Replace the cap after use.

Use Trimbow at the same times every day, morning and evening.

What if I make a mistake while using Trimbow?

If you miss a dose: take it as soon as you remember, unless it’s almost time for your next dose. Don’t double up to make up for the missed one. If you take more than prescribed: speak to a doctor or pharmacist straight away. Using too much can increase your likelihood of side effects like shaking, chest pain or irregular heartbeat.

How long does Trimbow take to work?

Answer:
Some people notice easier breathing within the first dose of Trimbow, but it usually takes a few weeks of regular use to feel the full benefit, but it can take up to three months. In studies, patients saw better lung function and fewer symptoms after several weeks of consistent treatment.[1]

How well does Trimbow work?

Answer:
Trimbow has been shown to reduce flare-ups and improve breathing in people with asthma that isn’t controlled by other inhalers. Studies on triple therapy (like Trimbow) found that people had less severe exacerbations and better quality of life compared with dual therapy inhalers. A lot of patients also noticed their lung function improved and had fewer symptoms after a few weeks of regular use.[2]

How does Trimbow compare with alternatives?

Answer:
Trimbow contains three medicines in one inhaler, while some alternatives like Fostair only combine two (beclometasone + formoterol). This means Trimbow can be more effective if your asthma isn’t controlled by dual therapy alone.[1]

Compared with other inhalers:

  • Fostair and Trimbow: Fostair is a dual therapy (ICS + LABA). Trimbow adds a third ingredient (a LAMA), which can give better protection against flare-ups.

  • Spiriva and Trimbow: Spiriva contains only tiotropium (a LAMA). Doctors may prescribe it alongside other inhalers, whereas Trimbow combines everything in one.

  • Trimbow and Ventolin (salbutamol): Ventolin is a reliever inhaler that works quickly to open your airways. Trimbow is a preventer, which you use on a daily basis to help control inflammation, reducing your symptoms over time.

  • Trimbow and salbutamol: These are often used together — Trimbow for long-term control, and salbutamol for fast relief if you get sudden symptoms.

Will I get side effects using Trimbow?

Answer:
Like all inhalers, Trimbow can cause side effects, but not everyone gets them. The most common include:

  • sore throat or hoarseness

  • headache

  • dry mouth

  • cough


Some people worry about weight gain when using steroid inhalers, but this is very unlikely at the low inhaled dose. Rinsing your mouth after use helps reduce the chance of oral thrush. If you notice chest pain, irregular heartbeat, or severe allergic reactions, get medical help right away.

Which inhalers are stronger than Trimbow?

Answer:
Trimbow is considered a strong treatment because it combines three different medicines in one. There is a higher strength of Trimbow, with 172 micrograms beclometasone. A step up from Trimbow would usually be oral corticosteroids or biologic therapies for severe asthma, prescribed by specialists if inhalers alone don’t give enough control.

Should Trimbow be kept in the fridge?

Answer:
No, Trimbow doesn’t need refrigeration. Keep it at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct sunlight. Don’t freeze it.

Is Trimbow a steroid inhaler?

Can I take Trimbow with other inhalers?

You won’t usually need Spiriva and Trimbow together, because Trimbow already contains a LAMA. A doctor might prescribe you Fostair instead of Trimbow, as they contain similar ingredients. Always check with your clinician before mixing inhalers.

How long does it take for Trimbow to work?

Answer:
Some people feel relief after the first few doses of Trimbow, but it usually takes several days to notice a clear improvement. The full benefit is seen after a few weeks or even months of regular use.[1]

Can I drink alcohol while using Trimbow?

Answer:
Yes, alcohol doesn’t directly interact with Trimbow. But drinking too much can make asthma worse by triggering inflammation. If you notice alcohol affects your asthma symptoms, you might want to reduce your intake.
