Mounjaro is a treatment for type-2 diabetes. It comes as a pre-filled pen that you’ll inject once a week.
The active ingredient in Mounjaro injections is tirzepatide. It attaches to the receptors of two hormones known as GIP and GLP-1 that get produced in your gut. Once attached to these receptors, it acts in the same way as GIP and GLP-1 hormones, telling your body to increase the amount of insulin that your pancreas releases. This helps keep your blood glucose levels under control.
Who is Mounjaro for?
Mounjaro is indicated for use in people with type-2 diabetes only. You’ll likely be prescribed Mounjaro alongside diet and exercise when a first-line treatment like metformin isn’t appropriate. You may also be prescribed Mounjaro alongside other medicine to treat type-2 diabetes.
Mounjaro is not suitable for people with type-1 diabetes. It’s not currently known whether Mounjaro can be used if you’ve had an inflamed pancreas (pancreatitis), or in children under 18.
Mounjaro has also shown to help with weight loss, so was recently licensed as an obesity treatment too. You can be prescribed it for weight loss if you have a BMI of 30 or over, or above 27 with weight-related conditions like hyperglycemia (high blood sugar).
What doses does Mounjaro come in?
Mounjaro comes in a range of doses to help control type-2 diabetes. You’ll typically start with the lowest dose, which contains 2.5mg of tirzepatide. After taking the 2.5mg dose for four weeks, you’ll move on to the 5mg pen.
After taking 5mg injections for four weeks, you should talk to your clinician about how you’re doing on the 2.5 and 5mg doses of Mounjaro. They’ll work with you to decide whether the 5mg dosage is enough to help control your diabetes, or if moving up to a higher dose is necessary.
Mounjaro is available in 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg doses. You might stay on the 5mg dose for longer than four weeks if you and your clinician are happy with your HbA1c levels. If you need a higher dose to keep your diabetes under control, you can speak to your clinician about increasing your dose. You’ll typically take this new dose for four weeks, before discussing whether you need to change dosage again or if your current dose is suitable.

How to Use Mounjaro
You should only ever use Mounjaro as instructed by your clinician. Mounjaro is a subcutaneous injection, which means you inject it into the fat under the skin. The best places to inject Mounjaro are your stomach, leg, or upper arm. You can use the same area of your body each time you inject Mounjaro, just make sure you don’t use the exact same place. If you inject insulin, be sure to use a different injection site for that, too.
Once you’ve chosen where you’re going to inject Mounjaro, follow these injection instructions to make sure you get the best results:
Check the pen is locked - don’t unlock it until you are ready to inject.
Remove the cap on the base by pulling it away from the pen.
Place the base flat on the skin of your chosen injection site, then twist the ring at the end of the pen to unlock it.
Press and hold the button on the end of the pen for 10 seconds. The first click you hear means that your injection has started, and the second means it has completed. If you can see the grey plunger in your pen, you’ll know the injection has finished.
Dispose of the used pen in a sharps disposal container immediately after using it. Don’t throw them away with household waste.
How long does it take Mounjaro to work?
A study analysing the time it took for people taking tirzepatide to achieve their glycemic and weight loss targets from baseline has shown very positive results.
The analysis compared the time it took for people to reach their HbA1C targets, a measure of your average blood glucose levels over the past 3 months. It compared patients taking tirzepatide (5mg, 10mg and 15mg doses) with those taking 1mg of semaglutide, and insulin. Semaglutide is another injectable treatment for type-2 diabetes that can also help you lose weight.
Participants on all three different doses of Mounjaro achieved their HbA1C and weight loss targets around four weeks sooner than those taking Semaglutide, and 12 weeks sooner than people taking insulin.
What should I do if I make a mistake taking Mounjaro?
If you’ve forgotten to inject your dose of Mounjaro, it shouldn’t cause you any problems. Follow these steps, depending on how long it’s been since your forgotten dose:
If it’s been four days or less since you missed your dose of Mounjaro, use it as soon as you remember. Then, take your next dose on your usual day.
If more than four days have passed since you should have taken Mounjaro, you should skip the dose you missed. Take your next dose on your upcoming scheduled day.
Make sure to never take two doses to make up for a missed dose. You must wait at least three days between taking Mounjaro injections.
If you accidentally take too much Mounjaro, contact your doctor straight away. You might feel or be sick, and experience low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia), which can be very dangerous.

Are there alternatives to Mounjaro?

There are alternative injections, or oral tablets, available to treat type-2 diabetes.
Semaglutide is another injection for type-2 diabetes, and is the active ingredient in treatments like Ozempic and Wegovy. Semaglutide works in a similar way to Mounjaro, binding to receptors of a hormone called GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1), and mimicking its action. This tells your body to produce more insulin. However, Mounjaro also attaches to receptors for the GIP (glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide) hormone, making it even more effective.
