Vitaros is a prescription cream you can apply to the head of the penis for erectile dysfunction. It comes in a 100mg tube in two different strengths: 200mcg and 300mcg (Or Vitaros 2mg/g and 3mg/g).
The main ingredient in Vitaros cream is alprostadil, which mimics a chemical we have in our bodies called prostaglandin E1 (PGE1). Alprostadil belongs to a class of drugs called vasodilators, which means that it helps blood vessels to widen. Vasodilators are used a lot in medicine, but the only approved therapeutic use for Vitaros is to treat erectile dysfunction.
How does Vitaros work?
Vitaros widens the blood vessels and relaxes the smooth muscles in the penis. This causes an erection that’s hard and firm enough for sexual activity.
Shortly before having sex, you’ll gently apply Vitaros alprostadil cream to the opening at the tip of the penis, called the urethra. Its cream formulation penetrates your urethra to produce an erection in as little as five minutes.
Who is Vitaros for?
Vitaros Cream is used by men who either can’t take oral treatments for ED such as Viagra or Cialis, or who have tried them and found them to be ineffective. You may be more familiar with pills like Viagra or Cialis, because they are usually the first option for most men with ED. Doctors prescribe pills to treat erectile dysfunction more often since they are low risk medicines and easily swallowed.
But some men can’t take these pills for medical reasons, so they get alternative treatments. Vitaros is one such alternative to Viagra and Cialis, along with other alprostadil medications (such as injections or urethral suppositories).

How to use Vitaros
If you’re using it for the first time, follow these simple steps:
Clean & prep yourself: urinate before using Vitaros. Thoroughly wash your hands. Open the packaging and carefully remove the AccuDose container.
Prepare for application: warm up the Vitaros cream by rolling the AccuDose container between your hands. If you removed the medication from your refrigerator to allow it to warm up on its own, you can skip that part. Twist the plunger end of the AccuDose container a few times to make sure it glides smoothly. Take off the cap on the AccuDose container.
Apply Vitaros: if you’re not circumcised, carefully pull your foreskin back before proceeding. Hold your penis straight up while holding the tip. Gently squeeze the tip to open your urethra. Hold the AccuDose container close to your urethral opening without inserting the tip. Slowly depress the plunger to apply the Vitaros cream.
Make sure it absorbs: any cream that gets on the outside of your penis should be gently pushed into your urethra with your finger. Make sure you hold your penis vertically for at least thirty seconds to give Vitaros time to absorb. Then, wash your hands and you’re ready to go.
How well does Vitaros work?
Vitaros has been shown to be effective for many men who can’t use ED tablets. Clinical trials show that Vitaros cream works for over 80% of men. [1]
Is there more than one dose of Vitaros Cream?
There are two dosages available for Vitaros cream: 200mcg and 300mcg. Your physician will most likely start you on the Vitaros 300mcg cream. If you experience uncomfortable side effects like genital aching, burning, or inflammation, your doctor may lower your dosage to 200mcg.

FAQ: Vitaros Cream
Have something specific you want to know? Search our info below, or ask our experts a question if you can’t find what you’re looking for.
Do I need a prescription for Vitaros?
Answer:
Vitaros is a prescription-only medicine. A doctor or prescribing clinician will need to consult with you and ask you a few questions about your health, so they can make sure it’s a safe and suitable treatment for you to use.
How long does it take for Vitaros to work?
Answer:
It can vary depending on a few factors, but after applying Vitaros, you should achieve an erection within a maximum of 30 minutes. Some men can develop an erection much faster in about five minutes. If you find that it doesn’t produce an erection within this time, let our clinician know. When you use Vitaros, you can expect your erection to last between one and two hours. Again, if you use Vitaros and find that the effects don’t last long enough for you to enjoy sex, tell us. Our clinician should be able to help you, or find a treatment that works better for you.
When might I be recommended Vitaros?
Answer:
There are lots of therapeutic options to treat erectile dysfunction. When your physician begins trying medications to treat your erectile dysfunction, they will normally start with prescription pills. They will most likely recommend Vitaros cream if pills and other treatments have failed, or if you have a medical condition that means pills aren’t right for you.
Does Vitaros cream work better than ED pills?
Answer:
For some men it does. Men react differently to ED medications based on their health and severity of symptoms. Some men have better success with pills, while others find that topical treatments like Vitaros cream work better for them. It’s hard to compare Vitaros Cream and, for example, Viagra directly in clinical terms. The way their performance has been measured differs slightly. Depending on the dose, the effectiveness rate for Viagra ranged from 62-82% in clinical trials [2], and for Vitaros it’s been recorded at ‘up to 83%’ [1] in one study. So given these rates, the two seem comparable. If we compare using the two in real life, you can take Viagra and other erectile dysfunction pills discreetly and without drawing much attention, whereas Vitaros administration is a bit more involved. However, some medical conditions prevent pills like Viagra from being safe. Vitaros cream works more quickly than Viagra, producing an erection in as little as 5 minutes while Viagra generally takes 30-60. In short, what works best for you may not be the same as what works best for someone else. But our experts can help you to explore which treatment options are better for you.
Can you get generic Vitaros cream?
Answer:
While many erectile dysfunction medications are available with generic prescriptions, Vitaros is not. Vitaros is the only erectile dysfunction cream on the market and there isn’t an equivalent that goes by another name.
