Hedrin 4% lotion is an effective head lice treatment. Head lice are small insects which typically live in your hair. They can vary in size, from the size of a full stop to the size of a sesame seed, and can even change colour to match the environment of the hair they’re living in. [1] This can make it harder to spot them. They live by feeding on your blood every couple of hours and inject saliva into your skin during the process. This can make your head feel very itchy. [2]
Head lice are transmitted by direct contact with hair: they cannot swim, fly or jump. This means it’s important to check all family members’ hair, especially those you have been in close contact with. The presence of head lice doesn’t mean that you are unclean, they don’t care how clean or dirty your hair is. They also don’t drown in water, so washing your hair to remove them won’t work. [3]
Hedrin lotion contains the active ingredient dimeticone. Dimeticone kills the lice through a physical process, not a chemical one. It works by drowning the lice in the solution. Without proper treatment, head lice will continue to lay eggs and survive. By using Hedrin, you can get rid of all head lice efficiently.
How does Hedrin work?
Hedrin contains the active ingredient dimeticone. When dimeticone is applied to the hair, it immobilises the lice and coats their internal surfaces so that they cannot excrete water. This causes blockages inside the lice resulting in a disruption in the gut [4] This stops the lice from functioning, causing them to die. However, the female lice can lay 5-6 eggs per day. These eggs take seven days to hatch, therefore, it’s important to treat hair with Hedrin again after seven days to eliminate all lice.

How to take Hedrin?
Getting lice-free hair is easy with Hedrin. Just follow the instructions below for safe application:
Apply a good amount of lotion to dry hair evenly, ensuring the scalp is fully covered. Do not use it on wet hair.
Spread the lotion from the roots to the tips.
Allow the hair to dry naturally.
Once dry, leave it on your hair for a minimum of 8 hours or overnight.
Then wash the hair thoroughly with normal shampoo.
After 7 days, apply Hedrin again repeating steps 1-5. This is to eliminate any lice that may have hatched within these days.
It’s important to repeat the treatment after 7 days. Not doing so can result in head lice coming back.
Even after the removal of lice, you may have nits left in your hair. Nits are empty egg cases that are attached to the hair and left behind after the lice have hatched. They are harmless and can be removed using the fingers or a fine-toothed comb.
How long does it take for Hedrin to work?
Although Hedrin starts to work almost instantly, the solution should be left in the hair for a minimum of 8 hours. This is because, if left on for a shorter time, the lice can start to move again [1]. Leaving Hedrin in your hair for a longer time is not harmful, so try to leave it on for 8 hours at least.

How does Hedrin compare to other treatments?
Answer:
There are lots of other treatments for hair lice aside from Hedrin. Permethrin is another active ingredient commonly found in some hair lice treatments. Although both ingredients can get rid of head lice, research has found dimeticone to be more effective.
In 2013, a study comparing the effectiveness of a single application of 4% dimeticone versus two applications of 1%-permethrin revealed that dimeticone was more successful in eliminating head lice. Results showed dimeticone was able to successfully remove all lice from 70% of participants compared to only 15% by permethrin [2].
Can I use Hedrin on Pets?
Answer:
No, Hedrin should not be used on animals or pets as it can be harmful to them.
Can Hedrin be used on coloured hair or hair extensions?
Answer:
Hedrin contains dimeticone, which is usually found in a lot of hair products. Hedrin is safe to use on hair dyed with permanent hair dyes. But hair with semi-permanent and temporary hair dyes might be affected [1]. It’s best to do a patch test on a small area of hair first to see how it reacts.
Hedrin has not been tested on extensions therefore, we don’t know if extensions will be affected by Hedrin or if the treatment is prevented from reaching your hair. It’s best to contact your hairdresser for further information.
What are the side effects of Hedrin?
Answer:
Many patients will not experience any side effects when using Hedrin. However, if you experience an allergic reaction (such as swelling, rash, or weals on the skin) or have any breathing difficulties, stop using Hedrin immediately and contact our clinicians.
