Kliofem is a combined HRT tablet that helps to keep symptoms of the menopause under control. It’s suitable for postmenopausal women who haven’t had a period for over a year.
It’s also sometimes used to treat osteoporosis, which can develop after the menopause and cause fragile and brittle bones.
Because it’s a continuous combined HRT treatment, it needs to be taken on a daily basis. The tablet comes in a calendar pack to help you keep a track of your medication.
How does Kliofem work?
With the menopause, your ovaries start to produce less and less oestrogen. This reduction in oestrogen triggers symptoms like discomfort during sex, vaginal dryness, difficulty sleeping, hot flushes, night sweats and low mood or anxiety.
For some women, these symptoms can be uncomfortable, and the oestrogen in Kliofem, estradiol, helps to relieve them.
But on its own, the oestrogen in Kliofem can cause the womb to grow more than it should, which may result in womb cancer if it isn’t kept in line. And this is where the progesterone in combined HRT treatments like Kliofem comes in. It keeps the oestrogen in check.
Who is Kliofem for?
It’s a continuous combined type of HRT, so it’s usually suitable for women who are postmenopausal (women who haven’t had a period for one year).
If you’re still having your period then, or if your womb has been removed, it won’t be the recommended treatment for you. Our clinician will usually recommend combined sequential or sequential HRT medications if you’re still getting your period, or oestrogen only options if you’ve had a hysterectomy.

How to take it
Take one Kliofem tablet daily, at the same time. Once you have taken all 28 tablets in the pack, move on to your next one.
If a dose is missed, it should be taken within the next 12 hours. If more than 12 hours has passed, start taking the tablet as you would normally the following day.
If you’re looking to stop taking Kliofem, let our clinician know. They can talk you through the effects of stopping treatment, and explore other medications with you if you’re looking to switch to something else.
How well does Kliofem work?
A clinical trial review for Kliofem showed the following results:
91% maintained or gained bone mineral density after two years of treatment [1]
70% and more reduction in frequency of hot flushes (symptoms) from week two onwards [2]
At 52 weeks, the average bleeding days in a 28 days cycle fell to less than one [2]
Kliofem also provides effective relief from postmenopausal symptoms, including hot flushes, vaginal dryness, mood swings, reduced sex drive and night sweats. [3]
Is there more than one dose of Kliofem?
No. Kliofem is a single dose tablet that contains 2mg estradiol and 1mg norethisterone. If you find that the hormones on this dose trigger side effects, or if it isn’t working for you as well as it should, drop our clinician a message. They can chat through alternative HRT treatment options with you.

FAQ: Kliofem
Have something specific you want to know? Search our info below, or ask our experts a question if you can’t find what you’re looking for.
Is Kliofem the same as Elleste Duet?
Answer:
Not quite. They’re both combined treatments that contain the same hormones, but Elleste Duet is sequential while Kliofem is continuous. So you take the same dose of Kliofem everyday, while some Elleste Duet pills are oestrogen-only. The branding is also different. Because they’re not made by the same manufacturer, the packaging and the appearance of the tablets themselves can differ, and there may be a slight difference in cost too.
Will I gain weight with the Kliofem 2mg treatment?
Answer:
There is no substantial evidence to support this. [1] But the menopause itself can cause weight changes, irrespective of whether you take HRT treatments like Kliofem.
Does Kliofem HRT cause bleeding?
Answer:
In the first three to six months of taking Kliofem, you may experience irregular bleeding. If you find that the bleeding persists after six months, get in touch with our clinician.
