What is Nalvee?

Nalvee contains dydrogesterone, a type of progestogen. It’s prescribed as part of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for women who still have their womb.

Oestrogen helps to relieve menopause symptoms but can cause your womb lining to grow too thick if it’s taken on its own. Nalvee helps to balance this, lowering the risk of womb problems like heavy bleeding or endometrial cancer.[1][2]

How does Nalvee work?

Nalvee contains dydrogesterone, which works by mimicking progesterone, which our bodies create naturally. It keeps the lining of your womb thin and stable, while supporting the beneficial effects of oestrogen on your symptoms.

Clinical studies show dydrogesterone can reduce hot flushes, improve sleep, and support your bone protection when combined with oestrogen.[3]

What doses of Nalvee are there?

Nalvee is available as 10 mg dydrogesterone film-coated tablets. Your doctor will decide whether you take it every day (continuous HRT) or just for part of your monthly cycle (sequential HRT) depending on your needs.

How to take Nalvee

  • Take your Nalvee tablet with water, at the same time each day.
  • You can take it with or without food.

You should follow your doctor’s advice on whether it should be used daily or in cycles.

How long does Nalvee take to work?

Nalvee is a progestin, so it works to protect your womb lining from thickening. This means it won’t help to improve your symptoms like oestrogen-based treatments do, but it will start to protect your womb lining as soon as you start your oestrogen treatment.[1]

What if I make a mistake while using Nalvee?

If you miss a dose of Nalvee,take it as soon as you remember, unless it’s nearly time for your next tablet. Don’t double up Nalvee to make up for a missed tablet.

If you accidentally take too much Nalvee, speak to a doctor or pharmacist for advice.

How well does Nalvee work?

Answer:
Studies show that dydrogesterone (the active ingredient in Nalvee) is highly effective at protecting the womb lining when used with oestrogen.[1]

Dydrogesterone can also help to reduce your menopause symptoms; studies show it can ease hot flushes and night sweats, improve sleep quality, and support bone protection when used alongside oestrogen.[1] Another advantage is that dydrogesterone is usually tolerated better than some other, older progestins.[2]

How does Nalvee compare with alternatives?

Answer:
Nalvee is a progestogen treatment. Other progestogens used for hormone replacement therapy include Utrogestan (micronised progesterone), norethisterone, levonorgestrel, and medroxyprogesterone.

Other progestogens can also protect the womb lining but might cause more bleeding changes or side effects in some women.[2] Studies suggest Dydrogesterone is often better tolerated than older-generation progestogens.[2]

Will I get side effects using Nalvee?

Answer:
Nalvee can cause side effects, but not all women will experience them. Some common ones include:

  • Headaches or breast tenderness

  • Mood changes

  • Spotting or irregular bleeding

  • Feeling bloated or sick


Serious side effects are rare, but you should be aware of them. If you notice chest pain, leg swelling, jaundice, or severe headaches, seek emergency medical help straight away.
