Moxivig eye drops are a type of ‘fluoroquinolone’ antibiotic for treating bacterial eye infections. They contain the active ingredient moxifloxacin, which targets and kills off the bacteria causing the infection. You just need to place a drop into the infected eye three times a day.
Moxivig belongs to a group of antibiotics called ‘fluoroquinolones’. Fluoroquinolone antibiotics effectively inhibit the DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV in the bacteria causing the infection.
These are important for the bacteria cell to replicate, repair itself, and recombine. Inhibiting them stops the infection spreading further, and kills the bacteria causing it. This should clear up any symptoms of eye infection.
Moxivig eye drops come in one dose to treat bacterial eye infections like conjunctivitis. This dose of Moxivig contains 0.5% w/v (weight per volume) of the active ingredient moxifloxacin, which is around 5 mg per ml.

You should always use Moxivig eye drops as your clinician has told you to. The typical dose is one drop in the infected eye (or eyes, if the infection affects both), three times per day. It’s usually best to do this first thing in the morning, then in the afternoon, and finally at night.
In order to use Moxivig eye drops:
Your eye infection should improve within five days of starting treatment with Moxivig. If your eye isn’t getting better after five days, speak with your clinician.
You should keep using Moxivig eye drops for two or three days after your symptoms clear up, or as long as your doctor has told you to. This helps prevent the infection coming back.
If you forget to take a dose of Moxivig, just skip the missed dose and take your next one as planned. Don’t double your dose to make up for missing one. If you accidentally use more Moxivig than you need, rinse it out with lukewarm water. You should also wait until it’s time for your next dose before putting any more drops in.
If you accidentally swallow Moxivig, get in touch with your clinician for advice. The amount of medicine in a bottle of Moxivig is unlikely to cause adverse effects if ingested – but it’s still best to speak with your doctor or pharmacist.
