What is Exocin?
Exocin is a medication that treats bacterial eye infections. It contains the active ingredient ofloxacin, which is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic (meaning it kills bacteria). It’s applied directly to infected eyes in the form of droplets.
Conjunctivitis, which can be both viral and bacterial, is a common eye infection. Children and elderly patients are most at risk of developing the condition, but it can affect anyone with a weakened immune system. Not washing your hands after inserting or removing your contact lenses can also lead to an infection. Bacteria are responsible for lots of ocular infections worldwide,[1]
and can do damage to your eyes if left untreated.
Although you might get better without treatment, managing bacterial strains by using antibiotics can reduce your symptoms and stop the infection getting worse. Daily Exocin drops should clear your infection completely and prevent you from passing it on to someone else.
How does Exocin work?
Conjunctivitis can sometimes be caused by viral infections, and often doesn’t need treating. It can also be brought on by allergens, like animal dander and pollen.[2]
Bacterial infections develop when certain bacteria are able to thrive around your eye. The three most common types of bacteria that cause these infections are Haemophilus influenza, Streptococcus pneumoniae and Staphylococcus aureus.[3]
The symptoms are usually more noticeable than the other types of infections — your eyes might appear much redder than usual, and can produce yellow or green discharge. Itchiness, burning and a gritty feeling in the infected eye are also common symptoms of a bacterial infection.
Ofloxacin, Exocin’s active ingredient, is an antimicrobial. These are substances that kill harmful microorganisms. When applied directly to your eye, Exocin drops should destroy the bacteria responsible for your eye infection and clear it within ten days.
Both viral and bacterial conjunctivitis (sometimes referred to as ‘red eye’) are highly contagious, so treating your eye infection rather than letting it run its course naturally means you’re much less likely to pass it on to someone else.
What doses does Exocin come in?
You should use Exocin exactly as it’s been prescribed. The drops need to be used regularly in order to work effectively.
The usual dose is one or two drops in each affected eye. You’ll do this every 2-4 hours for the first 2 days, and then four times a day until your infection has cleared. You should never use Exocin for longer than ten days. If your infection hasn’t cleared by then, speak to a clinician about alternative treatments.

How to use Exocin
If the tamper-proof seal of your Exocin bottle is broken before you first use it, you’ll need to change it and get a new one.
Before applying your eye drops, you should always wash your hands.
- Tilt your head back, as if you’re looking at the ceiling
- Pull your lower eyelid down gently until you can see a pocket of skin
- With the bottle held upside down, squeeze one or two drops into the affected eye(s)
- Let go of your eyelid, and hold your eye shut for thirty seconds.
If you feel like one of the drops has missed your eye, then try again. It’s important to apply Exocin eye drops properly so the medication can do its job.
You should try and avoid touching your eye directly with
What should I do if I make a mistake taking Exocin?
If you use more Exocin drops than you need, you should rinse your eye(s) with clean water and then wait until you’re due another dose before applying any more.
There’s never any need to double the amount you take, even if you’ve missed a dose. Wait until you’d usually take your eye drops, and continue with your dosing schedule as prescribed.

FAQ: Exocin Eye Drops
Have something specific you want to know? Search our info below, or ask our experts a question if you can’t find what you’re looking for.
Are there any treatments similar to Exocin?
A clinician will recommend a treatment they feel is best suited to you. Daily medication should be enough to clear your infection, but there are some things you can do to prevent picking another one up in future. Keeping on top of your personal hygiene, washing your bedsheets and towels regularly, and making sure your contact lenses (if you use them) are always clean can help you avoid picking up a bacterial eye infection.
Will Exocin cause any side effects?
If you experience any eye disturbances or discomfort after you've applied the drops, let one of our clinicians know. It could be that you need to switch to an alternative treatment you’ll be able to tolerate more easily.
The Patient Information Leaflet (PIL) included with your medicine contains a list of all the possible side effects you might encounter. If you feel like you’ve had an allergic reaction to Exocin, and develop symptoms like swelling of the mouth and tongue, or severe skin rashes, you should get immediate medical attention at your nearest hospital.
Do I need a prescription for Exocin?
How effective is Exocin?
Your infection should clear within ten days, but Exocin drops will start to work from the first time you apply them. It should soothe your affected eye(s) and relieve discomfort as it destroys the infection, which is another benefit of using eye drops to manage this condition.[3]
