GLP-1 treatments like Wegovy and Mounjaro aren’t just changing people’s BMI and health. As they become more commonly used, they’re having a profound impact on consumer buying behaviour and the wider economy too.

Overall, people using GLP-1 treatment may be spending less money on their weekly food shop. This could be due to a drop in the net volume of food people using treatment buy (due to eating less and being less hungry). But in some respects, by actively making healthier, better-quality food choices, people using weight loss treatment could be spending more on the fewer items they do buy.
For example, research shows that more people are gravitating towards high-protein foods and opting for smaller portions to improve their health. This trend is influenced by weight loss movements seen across social media, including many celebrities who are using medications like Ozempic and Wegovy.
Many supermarkets and global food companies are responding to the increase in demand for protein-rich foods. You’ll often notice that there’s a high-protein version of an increasing number of food items, including cereals, yogurts, and breads, to name a few. Another trend shows that people are consuming more natural foods, such as whole milk and meat, instead of vegan or alternative milks and plant-based meat options.
Grocery spending habits have also changed; many consumers are now looking for cheaper alternatives, healthier options, and nutrient-dense foods. Consumer trends show that fewer people are buying chocolates and crisps, instead opting for healthier snack alternatives. Many weight-loss users have reported that their grocery spending has decreased as a result of smaller portions, less consumption of junk food and takeaway, and a greater emphasis on cooking at home with fresh produce rather than ready-made or prepackaged meals (which can be more expensive).
While GLP-1 users may still eat out in restaurants, reports indicate that their food choices have changed. Many people on weight loss injections are choosing lighter options or lower-calorie meals when eating out, to align with their weight loss goals. As a result, they often order less, frequently skipping appetisers and desserts, and focusing primarily on main course dishes. They’re also seeking healthier options, such as grilled or oven-baked items, instead of fried and greasy foods.
Adjacent to this, many fast food restaurants are appealing to these preferences by offering low-calorie items to cater to these new eating habits. Some fast food places even provide protein-rich options to help diners stay aligned with their dietary needs.
The side effects of GLP-1 treatments, such as nausea and loss of appetite, are also changing eating habits. Many people using GLP-1 treatments find themselves craving less junk food and are less likely to order takeout. They may also be more likely to feel guilt for indulging in cheat meals, given the effort and cost they are putting into their weight loss journeys.
Some evidence suggests that GLP-1 treatment seems to have a reductive effect on alcohol consumption.
One consumer survey showed that 44% of people reduced their alcohol consumption after starting GLP-1 treatment, with 82% maintaining these habits even after stopping the treatment. Alcohol consumption has been declining over the years, particularly among the age group of 18-34. This trend, combined with the health benefits associated with GLP-1, could be contributing to a more widely seen drop in alcohol sales.
This decline may be partly because alcohol often contains hidden calories. Although it may seem like a drink to unwind with, many alcoholic beverages can be high in calories, and excessive consumption can hinder progress when trying to lose weight. Additionally, as people adopt healthier habits, they tend to avoid alcohol due to its negative impact on overall health.
In place of alcohol, sales of sparkling and flavored water are increasing, along with low-alcohol and low-calorie alcoholic options.
While spending on food among people using GLP-1 treatments may decrease, some research suggests that this money could be being spent on clothes and fashion products instead. A survey found that individuals using GLP-1 medications overall felt 36% more confident in their clothing choices and 33% more confident in their hair and skincare.
It goes without saying that many people who lose a significant amount of weight will buy clothes to fit their new appearance. In the same survey, clothing was identified as the primary item people are spending money on after starting GLP-1, with over a third of respondents reporting they are spending more. This trend has also led to increased spending on second-hand clothing on platforms like Vinted, with more people continuously buying and selling their clothes as they drop down through sizes.
It seems that way, and this could be for several reasons.
‘Ozempic face’ is one possible factor behind this. The term refers to the sagging skin some users experience after rapid weight loss, and some aesthetic companies have moved to cater to this by tailoring their services to GLP-1 users. Research shows an increased spending on treatments such as hyaluronic acid fillers, fractional CO2 lasers, and collagen supplements – beauty treatments that add plumpness and youthfulness to the face.
Going beyond cosmetic products, many people are opting for plastic and cosmetic surgery following GLP-1 treatments, to address issues such as excess skin removal or further body toning. Procedures like facelifts, fat grafting, skin tightening, and body lifts are becoming increasingly popular. One possible driving factor behind this is to correct sagging caused by rapid and significant weight loss, helping people achieve a complete GLP-1 makeover.
