What is Ventra?

Ventra is a branded treatment for gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD). This is where stomach acid escapes from the stomach into your oesophagus, causing pain, inflammation, and discomfort.

The most common cause of GORD is the ring of muscle at the base of your oesophagus weakening. Usually, it closes to stop stomach acid leaking back up into your oesophagus. But if you have GORD, acid is able to make it into the gullet and cause symptoms like heartburn and acid reflux.

How does Ventra work?

Esomeprazole, the active ingredient in Ventra, is a type of proton-pump inhibitor. They target proton pump molecules on the surface of gastric parietal cells inside the stomach. These cells are responsible for secreting stomach acid, and esomeprazole inhibits them, resulting in less acid in your stomach.

By reducing the amount of acid in your stomach, Ventra should relieve and prevent symptoms of GORD.

What doses of Ventra are there?

Ventra comes in two dosages: one contains 20 mg esomeprazole per capsule, and the other contains 40 mg. The dose you take will depend on how severe your symptoms are, and how much Ventra helps to control them.

If you don’t feel like your current dose is working well enough, speak to your clinician; they may increase your dose. On the other hand, your clinician might recommend lowering your dose of Ventra after a month or two of taking the higher one, to see if your symptoms stay controlled.

How to take Ventra

You can take your Ventra capsules whenever it suits you, either with food or on an empty stomach. Just swallow the capsules whole, with water, around your chosen time each day.

If you have difficulty swallowing, you can dissolve the contents of your capsules in a glass of still water. Carefully open the capsule, empty it into a glass of water, and stir thoroughly. Drink the mixture within 30 minutes, always making sure it’s mixed well before drinking. When you’ve finished, fill the glass half full with water and rinse it thoroughly, before drinking this as well. This ensures you’ve taken all of the medicine.

How long does it take Ventra to work?

Ventra gets to work as soon as you take it, and you should feel the benefit within two or three days of starting treatment. However, it can take up to four weeks for your treatment to work fully.

What should I do if I make a mistake taking Ventra?

You should only ever take Ventra as you’re instructed to by your clinician. If you forget to take your dose of Ventra, it’s not a problem. Just take it as soon as you remember. Or, if it’s almost time for your next dose, just skip the one you missed. Never take a double dose to make up for missing a dose.

If you take more Ventra than you should, get in touch with your clinician immediately. You may need treatment for any symptoms you experience.

Are there any alternatives to Ventra?

For people taking esomeprazole, the severity of their symptoms decreased more rapidly than those on the other proton-pump inhibitors. Those taking esomeprazole also completely recovered from heartburn faster than people on other proton-pump inhibitors. This suggests that esomeprazole may be more effective than other treatments currently available for GORD.

Does Ventra have any side effects?

Answer:
Like any medication, you could get side effects when taking Ventra – although not everyone will. There are some rare but serious side effects you should watch out for. If you get any of the following Ventra side effects, stop taking it and contact your doctor immediately:

  • Yellow skin, dark urine, and tiredness – this can be a sign of liver problems;

  • A rash, swelling of your throat, tongue, lips, or body, sudden wheezing, fainting, or difficulty swallowing – you could be allergic to Ventra;

  • A sudden severe rash with blisters or peeling, affecting the lips, eyes, mouth, nose, and genitals. This is very rare, affecting up to one in 10,000 people taking Ventra.


More common side effects of Ventra include:

  • Headache;

  • Diarrhoea, stomach pain, constipation, or wind;

  • Nausea and vomiting;

  • Benign stomach polyps.
