What is Zoton Fastab?

Zoton Fastab is a daily tablet that eases the symptoms of GORD and acid reflux. Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease is a condition that causes regular, persistent acid reflux and heartburn. There are a few ways of treating it, but a daily proton pump inhibitor (PPI) is usually recommended when over-the-counter antacids or natural remedies aren’t working for you.

PPIs help decrease the amount of acid your stomach produces. Zoton FasTab contains the active ingredient lansoprazole, which is used to treat heartburn, acid reflux and stomach ulcers caused by excess stomach acid.^[1]

How does Zoton FasTab work?

Every time you swallow, your diaphragm relaxes and a ring of muscle at the base of your oesophagus (the tube that connects your stomach to your mouth) opens, allowing food to reach your stomach.^[2] But for people with GORD, this muscle has usually become weakened. This means your stomach acid can travel back upwards towards your oesophagus, causing acid reflux, heartburn and other unpleasant symptoms like bloating and nausea.^[3]

Proton pump inhibitors like Zoton FasTab work by reducing your stomach’s gastric acid production. The tablets can be taken a number of ways, and are used to manage and prevent symptoms of acid reflux, including regurgitation and heartburn, and help heal conditions such as gastric and duodenal stomach ulcers. It’s also prescribed to people with Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, and those taking continued non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

Zoton FasTab tablets contain aspartame, an artificial sweetener. Unlike other PPIs, they can be taken by placing the tablets directly on your tongue. You can suck them like a sweet, and the tablets dissolve in your mouth. Zoton FasTab can also be swallowed whole, or in some cases, dispersed in water and dispensed into your mouth using a syringe.

What doses does Zoton FasTab come in?

Zoton FasTab tablets are available in two strengths: 15mg and 30mg. The strength you’re prescribed will depend on the condition you’re trying to manage. A clinician will start you on a dose they think will keep your GORD symptoms under control.

For acid regurgitation, reflux, and heartburn, the usual dose is one 30mg tablet daily for four weeks. This can be continued for another four weeks if necessary. For long-term treatment, the dose is 15mg to 30mg once daily, in the morning.

If you see no improvements by then, let your clinician know and they can find an alternative medication or switch your dose. For stomach ulcers, one higher strength 30mg tablet should be taken each day. It’s possible to have several stomach acid related conditions at once, and they often share similar uncomfortable symptoms, so Zoton FasTab doses will vary person to person.

How to take Zoton FasTab

Zoton tablets can be taken in a few different ways, which gives you options if swallowing tablets isn’t for you.

The usual way of taking the tablets is by placing one a day on your tongue, and sucking it. Microgranules are released as the tablet dissolves, which you should swallow without chewing or crushing.

You can also swallow the tablets whole, and should do so with a glass of water first thing in the morning. It’s best to take Zoton FasTab before you’ve eaten.

The third option is to take the medication using a syringe. If you have difficulty swallowing tablets, this could be the best way to take it. You’ll need a 5ml syringe for the 15mg dose, and a 10ml syringe for the 30mg tablet.

1. Take the plunger out of the syringe
2. Place a tablet into the chamber
3. Attach the plunger back onto the syringe
4. Draw around 4ml of tap water into the syringe for the 15mg tablets, or 9ml for the 30mg dose
5. Draw 1ml of air into the syringe by inverting it
6. Gently shake the syringe for 10-20 seconds, until the tablet has dissolved
7. You can empty the solution directly into your mouth

You can refill the syringe with another 2-5ml of water to flush out what’s left in it. This can be swallowed the same way as the first dose.

What if I make a mistake while taking Zoton FasTab?

If you take more Zoton than you need, you should get medical attention right away.

If you miss a dose, you can take it on the same day you were supposed to swallow your tablet as long as it’s not too close to the time your next dose is due.

You don’t need to take two doses of Zoton (double-dosing) to make up for one you missed the day before. If you feel like your GORD symptoms are well managed, you should continue taking your medicine as prescribed rather than stopping your course of treatment.
