Sandrena is an HRT treatment in gel form. It’s an oestrogen only treatment containing a hormone called estradiol. Postmenopausal women may experience uncomfortable symptoms like hot flushes in the face, neck and chest, joint pains, insomnia, or memory lapses, due to the reduced levels of oestrogen hormone in the body. Sandrena gel helps alleviate these symptoms.
Sandrena gel comes in doses of 0.5mg and 1mg, which contain estradiol 0.5mg and 1mg respectively. Estradiol is the synthetic form of oestrogen and compensates for the dropping levels of this hormone in postmenopausal women.
How Does Sandrena Work?
During menopause there is a drop in oestrogen levels in the body. This leads to various postmenopausal symptoms like hot face, neck and chest (hot flushes), joint pains, insomnia, memory lapses and reduced sex drive.
Sandrena is an alcohol based gel which contains estradiol. When you apply this gel, the alcohol evaporates and the estradiol is absorbed into the skin. The absorbed estradiol supplements the level of oestrogen and reduces the postmenopausal symptoms.
Once you start Sandrena treatment, your symptoms should start to ease within a few weeks.
Who is Sandrena for?
Menopause is an inevitable phase of every woman’s life. But the discomfort it brings can be managed. Menopause generally happens in the age of 45 to 55 years, but in some cases it can be earlier or later.
Sandrena can be used for continuous (everyday) or cyclical (certain days throughout the month) treatment. If you still have your womb, it’s advisable to take an adequate dose of progesterone, to reduce the risk of thickening of the uterus lining (endometrium hyperplasia).
If you are postmenopausal and not using any HRT or are on a combined HRT you can start your Sandrena treatment on any day. If you are on a continuous sequential HRT regimen, you can begin this treatment on the completion of the current regimen.

Sandrena Gel Reviews: How well does it work?
Based on a clinical study exploring the effectiveness of Sandrena (used alongside progesterone):
71% women had no bleeding by the sixth month [1]
95% women had total relief in hot flushes at one year [2]
What dose of Sandrena is best for me?
Sandrena Gel is available in 0.5mg and 1mg doses. Normally, you’ll be started off with the 0.5mg (lowest) dose to see how effective it is. If the lower dose is ineffective, it may be increased gradually, up to 1.5mg. Sensitivity of oestrogen varies for every woman, and this is taken into consideration by our clinician.

FAQ: Sandrena
Have something specific you want to know? Search our info below, or ask our experts a question if you can’t find what you’re looking for.
Sandrena Gel and progesterone: do I need to take both?
Answer:
If your womb is still ‘intact’ (so you’ve not had a hysterectomy), yes. Oestrogen only treatments like Sandrena gel can cause the womb lining to thicken if the oestrogen level is left unchecked, and this can increase the risk of problems like cancer. Progesterone counters this and keeps oestrogen levels balanced.
What is Sandrena Gel made from?
Answer:
The active ingredient in Sandrena Gel is Estradiol. Estradiol is the synthetic form of the biological hormone oestrogen. The other ingredients that are in the gel are Carbopol 974P, Trolamine, Propylene Glycol, Alcohol and Purified Water.
Does Sandrena Gel cause weight loss?
Answer:
There is no substantial evidence to support this. But whether you are taking Sandrena or not, menopause may lead to changes in weight. There are a lot of factors involved in weight loss and weight gain, so it’s possible for someone to experience these when taking a treatment and they’ll still be recorded as a side effect. But there isn’t thought to be a direct link between taking HRT and changes in weight.
Can I get oestrogen gel over the counter?
Answer:
Sandrena, just like any other oestrogen gel, isn’t available over-the-counter. It’s a prescription only treatment so you’ll need to have a consultation with our clinician, so they can determine whether it’s the right treatment for you.
How long before Sandrena Gel starts to work?
Answer:
Once you start Sandrena, you should experience a relief in symptoms in a few weeks’ time. It may take at least three months to feel the full benefits [1]. Initially it may also cause some side effects like vaginal bleeding, breast tenderness or enlargement, fluid retention leading to bloating, headaches, leg cramps, indigestion, swelling of other body parts and increased blood pressure, which subside within a few weeks.
