Spedra is an ED medication that works a bit like Viagra — only faster.
The active ingredient in Spedra is avanafil, which relaxes your blood vessels and helps circulation to your penis. This makes it easier to get and maintain a firm erection, but you’ll still need to be aroused for the medication to work.
Spedra kicks in quickly and stays effective for up to 5 hours. That means you don’t have to worry about picking the perfect time to take it.
How does Spedra work?
Spedra is in the same family of medicines as Viagra, Cialis and Levitra. They’re called PDE5 inhibitors and they do what it says on the tin: inhibit an enzyme called PDE5. In other words, they help the blood vessels in your body relax, so blood can get to where you need it most. The end result is a firm erection.
Like other erectile dysfunction medications, Spedra only helps with the physical part of sex. You still need to be turned on for it to work.
Spedra and Stendra: what’s the difference?
Sometimes medications have different names in different countries. In the USA, paracetamol is called acetaminophen, and Spedra is called Stendra.
Both Spedra and Stendra are made by Menarini, contain avanafil and come in the same doses. The one you’ll be prescribed depends on where you live. For the UK, that’ll be Spedra.

How to take Spedra
Take Spedra by mouth, with water, 15-30 minutes before you have sex. It’ll usually take around 15 minutes to become effective.
Your Spedra prescription comes with a package insert that contains everything you need to know about this medication. It’s important to give it a read-over before taking your first pill, and you should always take it as instructed. Don’t exceed the Spedra dosage recommended for you by our clinician.
What dose of Spedra should I take?
Spedra comes in three doses: 50mg, 100mg and 200mg.
Some men who take 50mg find it takes longer to work, or that they don’t stay hard for long enough. On the flip side, some men who take 100mg or 200mg experience side effects. We usually recommend starting with the lowest dose that the doctor thinks will be effective, and adjusting based on how it works for you.
We’ll help you find the Spedra dose that’s right for you. Let our clinician know if it’s your first time taking Spedra or if you’ve tried it before so they can make the best recommendation. Medical conditions and lifestyle can impact the dose too. (We’ll ask about those before you get your prescription.)
What should I do if Spedra doesn’t work?
It can take a couple of attempts to work. But you shouldn’t take a second or third pill right away if you’re unable to get an erection after taking the first. Always leave at least 24 hours between pills.
If you’re not getting the results you want with Spedra, talk to us. Sometimes it’s a matter of adjusting the dose, other times it’s best to try a new ED medication altogether. We’ll work with you to find that perfect balance: effective medication with few (or no) side effects.

FAQ: Spedra
Have something specific you want to know? Search our info below, or ask our experts a question if you can’t find what you’re looking for.
Can you get Spedra over the counter?
Answer:
No. Most ED drugs like Spedra are prescription-only medicines. You’ll need a clinician or pharmacy prescriber’s approval to use them. That’s because even though they’re generally considered low risk, they can potentially be harmful for some people, especially if not supervised and overseen by a medical professional.
How effective is Spedra?
Answer:
Spedra is usually effective the first or second time you try it. The clinical trials for avanafil, Spedra’s active ingredient, showed that the 100mg dose was 11% more effective for men with ED than the 50mg dose. [1] So if you’re taking 50mg and it’s not working for you, tell us. A higher dose might be what you need.
Does Spedra work as well as other ED drugs?
Answer:
The active ingredient in Spedra is from the same pharmaceutical family as sildenafil (Viagra), tadalafil (Cialis) and vardenafil (Levitra). PDE5 inhibitors all work in the same way, but people are unique. It’s possible you’ll have a better experience with one medication over another, so we’ll work with you to find a treatment that, well, works.
Does Spedra cost more than other drugs?
Answer:
Spedra is more expensive than some other ED meds. That’s because it’s a brand-name pill, whereas pills like Viagra are available in a cheaper generic form. Because Spedra is relatively new, the company that makes it still has exclusivity rights to the formula and there isn’t a generic version. We understand that price plays a big role in whether a medication is a good fit for you, and we offer both name-brand and generic medications when they’re available. There’s nothing wrong with being budget-conscious and we can help you find a pill that offers the best value. Why take Spedra when it’s more expensive than other medications? Well, it gets to work the fastest (in about 15 minutes). And sometimes speed just can’t be beat.
Spedra vs. Viagra: which is better?
Answer:
Spedra has been shown to be about as effective as Viagra, but it kicks in faster than the little blue pill. [2] Other studies have found Spedra’s active ingredient avanafil to be more effective than sildenafil (Viagra’s active ingredient), as well as less likely to lower your blood pressure.[3] Spedra also has fewer reported side effects compared to other ED medications, but it hasn’t been around as long as Viagra, Cialis and Levitra, so it’s possible that those reports will come in time. Part of our service is helping you find the right medication, so you’ll be able to discuss the different options with a clinician before getting your prescription.
