What is the price of Mounjaro per month?

Prices of weight treatments can vary depending on where you get them from, and can change over time.

Below is a summary of Treated prices at time of writing.

Mounjaro costs:

  • £279.95 per pen for the 2.5mg and 5mg dose;
  • £389.95 per pen for the 7.5mg and 10mg doses;
  • £449.95 per pen for the 12.5mg and 15mg doses.

Before beginning any weight loss treatment, make sure you’re getting them from a reliable, trusted source. Online pharmacies should include their credentials so you know your treatment is safe and being overseen by a medical professional. Doctors should be registered with the General Medical Council (GMC),prescribing pharmacists with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC), and prescribing nurses with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).

When looking at the cost of Mounjaro each month, it’s worth remembering that your treatment plan might not always follow the recommended linear path of increasing your dose every four weeks.

Weight loss plans are personal, so to some extent it’s up to you how you use Mounjaro. Changing doses can sometimes cause side effects, or make ones you already have worse until you adjust to a new pen. You might even find that you want to move back down to your prior dose if you change and then decide the amount you were taking before switching doses was working well enough for you.

This is something to consider when trying to calculate how much Mounjaro will cost you in the long term. The 15mg pen is the maximum dose, so you’ll never exceed the costs of this each month. But as we’ve discussed, you might find that a lower dose pen becomes the amount you use regularly to maintain your weight loss.

What are the long-term costs of using Mounjaro?

Below are some examples of how much it would cost to use Mounjaro over different lengths of time, using current Treated prices as a guide.

To cover the standard 52 week year, you’d need to use 13 pens – and we’ve outlined the annual cost below.

But for many people, it might also be useful to know what it will cost to use Mounjaro for 18 months (18 pens). The studies that have shown it to help people lose an average of 20.9% of their starting weight were conducted over 72 weeks – so if this is your target weight loss, 18 months could be a realistic duration of use.

To do these calculations, we’ve counted four weeks (28 days) as a month, as this is how long each pen lasts for.

In some cases, you may be able to save money on Mounjaro by ordering more than one pen at a time in packs (for example, ordering two or three months worth of pens at a time).

First, let’s look at the cost of Mounjaro if you were to order one pen at a time.

If you followed the typical titration guidance, by starting at 2.5mg in month 1, increasing up to 15mg by month 6, and then maintained at the 15mg dose, the cost of Mounjaro would be:

£5369.35 over 12 months; or:
£7619.10 over 18 months.

But for some people, the 10mg dose is sufficient as a maintenance dose, and helps them to lose weight at a rate they’re happy with. In this case, if you instead started at the 2.5mg dose, increased to 10mg by month 4, and then maintained at the 10mg dose, the cost of Mounjaro would be:

£4739.35 over 12 months; or:
£6639.10 over 18 months.

There are various multi-pack options available for people who want to order two or three month’s supply of treatment at a time. The long-term price of treatment may vary depending on the specific multi-pack you selected.

But here’s a best-case example of the cost of Mounjaro over 48 weeks if you were to order treatment in batches of three pens.

Following the typical titration guidance, you could order your pens according to the following schedule:

£879.95 for a Starter Pack, which includes the 2.5mg, 5mg and 7.5mg pens;
£1219.95 for your next 3-pack of pens, including doses 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg;
£1299.95 for your next 3-pack of 15mg pens; and then finally:
£1299.95 for your next 3-pack of 15mg pens.

Ordering your pens in batches of three like this would mean you’d pay a total of £4699.80 for 48 weeks supply.

And if you needed to order another single pen to take your treatment up to 52 weeks, adding one more 15mg pen (£449.95) onto this amount (£5,149.75) would still work out cheaper than ordering them individually, saving you £219.60.

And if you followed the typical titration plan but used the 10mg dose to maintain your weight loss, ordering in batches of three might look like this:

£879.95 for a Starter Pack, which includes the 2.5mg, 5mg and 7.5mg pens;
£1079.95 for your first 3-pack of 10mg pens;
£1079.95 for your next 3-pack of 10mg pens; and then finally:
£1079.95 for your next 3-pack of 10mg pens.

This would mean a total of £4119.80 for 48 weeks supply. Adding one more 15mg pen brings the 52-week total to £4569.75 (saving you £169.60 compared to ordering the pens individually).

Your clinician can help you decide which is the most suitable maintenance dose for you. Although the highest dose, 15mg pen has been shown to be the most effective for weight loss, Mounjaro may still be effective enough for some at maintenance doses of 10mg or even 5mg. So this is something else to consider when weighing up the long-term costs.

Is Mounjaro available on the NHS?

Mounjaro is available as a weight loss treatment on the NHS currently, but only if it’s prescribed by a specialist weight management service.. Access to it, though, is phased and initially limited to people with a BMI over 35 (or 32.5 for some ethnicities) and a health condition related to their weight like hypertension.

To use the two weight loss injections that are available on the NHS, Wegovy and Saxenda, certain criteria also need to be met.

Both treatments are also normally prescribed through a specialist Tier 3 weight management service.

To start Wegovy, you also need a BMI of 35 or over. You might also be prescribed it if your BMI is 30 or over and you have a weight-related condition. This is usually after a GP referral, if changing your diet and exercise routine hasn’t helped you lose weight.

To get Saxenda on the NHS, you need to be over 18 with a BMI of 35 or over (or 32.5 for some ethnicities), and have one or more obesity-related conditions.

How long does it take for Mounjaro to work?

How effective Mounjaro is will depend on your personal response to the medication. There are six doses, of which you’ll usually start on the lowest and work your way up to a maintenance dose, 15mg pen.

This implies that you’ll likely use Mounjaro for a minimum of six months, but this is something you can discuss with a clinician. The length of time you need the injections for can depend on several factors, like the amount of weight you want to lose, how much exercise you do, and what your diet looks like while using Mounjaro.

The higher Mounjaro doses are normally more expensive than the starting ones, so this might factor into how long you use the pens for, or the length of time you stick with one pen for.

In one study, participants used Mounjaro for a 36 week lead-in period, followed by a period that lasted 52 weeks when they were split into two groups: one group continued to receive Mounjaro and the second received a placebo. During the lead-in period, participants used the 2.5mg dose pen and changed it every four weeks until they reached the maximum tolerated dose of 10mg or 15mg. By week 36, people treated with Mounjaro lost on average 20.9% of their body weight. And by the 36 week point to the end of the 88 weeks, participants in the Mounjaro group lost an additional 5.5%, but those in the placebo group gained 14% of body weight on average.

While this doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll need to use Mounjaro for this long (almost two years), it does perhaps highlight how safe, steady weight loss isn’t always a quick process. Losing weight will be different person-to-person, which means there are no hard-and-fast rules about how long it will take to reach your target weight.

In a similar way to how the initial dose is designed to help you get used to the medication, the maintenance dose can help you do exactly that — maintain your weight loss. This means you can decide how long you continue using the injections before you’re ready to try and maintain a healthy weight through regular exercise and a balanced diet, without the need for Mounjaro.

How much is Mounjaro long-term?

As we’ve covered throughout this guide, the length of time you’ll need Mounjaro for is open-ended. Before starting your weight loss journey, you can speak to a clinician about how much weight you intend to use.

You can also discuss other factors that might determine how long you need to use a weight loss treatment for, such as any preexisting conditions you have, your eating habits, and how often you’re active.

If you know how long you intend to use Mounjaro for and you’re concerned about the costs, you can try only moving up to a dose if you feel it’s necessary. If for example, you find the 5mg or 7mg strength pen is helping you lose weight effectively, you can remain on that dose. This will help keep costs down, which might mean you can carry on using Mounjaro if you feel you need to.

Is Mounjaro worth the price tag?

In trials, Mounjaro has proved effective for safe, steady weight loss. If you’ve tried other conventional approaches for weight loss and found they’ve not worked for you, then trying an injectable weight loss treatment could be a worthwhile investment.

Reading some customer reviews might be the best of hearing some real-world experiences of using Mounjaro. It can also be a good insight into how the injections affect people differently, and work at a different rate person-to-person.

Does Mounjaro cost the same everywhere?

Mounjaro prices might be different depending where you get it from. You should always be mindful of who is selling weight loss treatments, and have a clear picture of what is involved when you agree to use a particular service.

Because you need a prescription for Mounjaro, you should avoid any companies offering the injections without one. Where you live might also change the price of Mounjaro, and its availability.
